Hi All,

I was going through Rob's Techwave presentation in which i
found that we can redirect isql output to some other
directory/ path.

I tried but didn't understood, how to execute the below
cmd.

Please help me with the syntax.

I am using isql client :: Sybase CTISQL Utility /15.0
esd#7/DRV.15.0.3

Sybase version :: 15.0.2 ebf 14336

•Pipe SQL output to some auxiliary utility (which must be
in your $PATH or %PATH%)
1> sp_who
2> go | grep sa
0 19 running sa sa BIGBOX 0 master tempdb

1> sp_who
2> go > /tmp/result.txt
1> sp_who
2> go >> d:\result.out

I am using the below version, but still its not working,
also Rob V has mentioned "Pipe SQL output to some auxiliary
utility (which must be in your $PATH or %PATH%)"

I guess there must be some otherway for the work out because
i am using the below cmd

isql -Usa -S DSEB_TK -Pxyz

MY ASE version is :-

Adaptive Server Enterprise/15.0.2/EBF
14336/P/x86_64/Enterprise Linux/ase1502/2486/64-bit/FBO/Thu
May 24 08:06:35 2007

isql version

isql -v

Sybase CTISQL Utility/15.0/P-EBF14165 ESD
#7/DRV.15.0.3/Linux Intel/Linux 2.4.21-47.0.1.ELsmp

Jay's comment (and the Sybase document Jay referenced) states that you must be using SDK 15 ESD #15. This means that
when you run 'isql -v' you should see '15.0/ESD #15' (or a higher ESD number) in the version string.

Your 'isql -v' output shows that you are using ESD #7 ... this (older) version does not have the redirection capability.

--------------

If you need/want the redirection capability then consider downloading a version of SDK 15 with an ESD number
greater-than-or-equal-to 15.

NOTE: Do not install the 'SDK 15/ESD #15+' package on top of your current ASE software - you could break some parts of
your ASE software; instead, install the 'SDK 15/ESD #15+' package in it's own directory structure.

NOTE: ASE 15.0.3/ESD #1 comes with SDK 15.0/ESD #16; in this case you could install the newer ASE 15 software and at
the same time obtain access to a version of isql that supports the redirection capability.

The "|" and ">" and ">>" do not belong in the isql. Those
tokens are for use by the operating system, specifically
Unix or one of its many variants.

"sp_who" and "go" are for isql. The rest, passed to isql,
is just meaningless gibberish. It only has meaning to the
underlying operating system.

Try the following.

Edit a file, let's call it "SQL.TXT". In that file, I want you
to put in your sql queries. Say, for example:

sp_who
go
select name from sysobjects
where type = 'U'
order by crdate
go

Ok, still with me? Now, you have this file saved that you've
called "SQL.TXT". Let's try a "pipe" command FROM THE OPERATING
SYSTEM -- this is NOT for use from within isql --

isql -U{etc} -P{etc} < SQL.TXT

Now -- at this point, you should see the results of those
sql queries you entered. But that's not quite what you want
yet, is it? Let's now "redirect" that output to a file, which
we're going to call, "RESULTS.TXT".

isql -U{etc} -P{etc} < SQL.TXT > RESULTS.TXT

Now -- you see nothing, right? Your operating system just put
up a prompt for your next command. But wait! Let's take a look
at what's inside "RESULTS.TXT" - - - -

- - - - - oooooooh, the suspense is killing me - - - - -

Actualy, that's not true for recent versions of isql, where output
redirection has been added to the command parser (a la sqsh).

How recent? I tried it on 15.0.2 and it failed to work
as I expected.

First of all, these ISQL features are technically not part of ASE. They are
part of OpenClient Server releases, specific version of which are bundled
with ASE.
The "|" and ">" and ">>" extensions are part of OCS 15.0 ESD#12. ASE 15.0.2
ESD#4 contains OCS 15.0 ESD#11, and ASE 15.0.2 ESD#5 contains OCS 15.0
ESD#13.You can also download the OCS SDK separately from the download area
on sybase.com
To check with isql version you're running, do "isql -v".

HTH,

Rob V.
