Hello,

I am using PB 11.5 and here's what I'd like to do :

Filter the results of one or multiple columns in a crosstab datawindow
(filter the values I mean). So if a column called status has values G, I, P,
maybe I just want to show G and I but not P.

I can filter a row fine because the field actually exists after the crosstab
is created, but the columns are not accessible since they dont really exist
anymore after the design is created off the select, only the crosstab result
fields seem to be there. Am I missing something? This is my first try with
crosstab datawindows.

Since the columns were not accessible, I tried to modify the select by
adding a where clause with Modify(), the select gets modified fine, but even
if I re-retrieve the data, it's like the crosstab view does not get
re-generated, the same data keeps re-appearing, unchanged. Is there a way to
re-fire the crosstab redraw engine?

Thanks!
Dominic

Just to add some information, I also want to be able to show those columns
again (basically they'll have a dddw with the values of that column, then
they'll be able to remove values or re-add values dynamically to modify the
results).

Dominic,

I assume you want to filter the set of dynamic crosstab columns. They're
generated from the unique values returned for your status column within all
rows by your DW's SQL Select statement. As long as you have the possibility
to control the result rows, you can:
- define a retrieval argument of array type and put "objstatus IN
(:aa_values)" in your statement. Do not use Modify!
- if your status is a single letter, you can use a simple string argument
(not array!) and put instr(:as_values, objstatus) > 0 clause in your SQL
Select statement. This example is for Oracle - modify it for another DBMS.

In order to re-generate the crosstab view on each retrieval, you must have
checked "Rebuild Columns At Runtime" option of your crosstab DW (see
Design --> Crosstab... from your DW painter). Of course, this option can be
programmatically switched with a Modify statement before your next
Retrieve().

Hope this helps!
Ivaylo

Thanks for the quick reply!

The "Rebuild Columns At Runtime" is already checked right now. As you
mentionned not using modify, I'm guessing even if that's checked, the
retrieve after the modify will not work (which is what I was trying and
wasn't working).

The problem with the retrieval argument and IN clause, is that I definitely
don't want them to enter the values. Of course I could just not show that
parameter and feed the values, but some columns have a lot of values and
with multiple columns with multiple IN, that would make a pretty huge select
statement and I'm not sure where that would lead (if that would even work).

I will try it anyhow and see what kind of results I get.

Thanks,
Dominic

After testing, the string array worked fine!

I'll do some more testing with heavy tables and see if it works all the
time, and with all types of data.

I wish the Filter() worked though, seems to me you should be able to filter
the original results and refire the redraw of the crosstab somehow.

Thanks for the help!

Excellent!

If you explore your DW object through "Edit syntax", you'll notice that only
row fields are stated in the definition, so you can count just on them.
Seems like Filter() works on the fields defined as rows within the crosstab,
not upon the entire original SQL Select statement. How sad!

And "View --> Column specification" is disabled for crosstabs.

Good luck!

BTW: have you tried to retrieve everything and then to apply some filter
like:
dw_my.SetFilter("objstatus in ('G', 'I')")
dw_my.Filter()
dw_my.Sort()
