Powerbuilder 11.5.1 build 4011 Using PFC

Dear,

We encounter an annoying problem when deleting a row in a datawindow.
Powerbuilder hangs on the 2nd getitemstring function call.

Details:
The datawindow control contains an external datawindowobject. The rows in
the datawindow are linked using some technical fields, meaning that 1
logical row represents 2 or more datawindow rows. When user wants to delete
a logical row, at least 2 datawindow rows are deleted.
When the current datawindow row is the last row, PB hangs when deleting a
row before, when the current row is another row, no problem.
Deleting is as follows:
When the user wants to delete a logical row, the first datawindow row of the
logical row is searched and deleted, then all the other linked datawindow
rows are deleted. When the current row of the datawindow control is the
last row and the user presses delete, Powerbuilder hangs in the
pfc_rowfocuschanged event when deleting the first row of the logical part.

Hanging on the following statement:
idw_critedria. dynamic of_action( this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0101_id_status_dddw" ), this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0201_id_status_dddw" ), this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0101_id_mode_dddw" ), 2, currentrow)

PBDEBUG is giving this as last line:
Executing object function GETITEMSTRING for class DW_DETAIL, lib entry
W_UPDATE_CREDIT_1_N
Executing system dll function

In the Windows Task Manager we can see that the PB115.exe is using 50% of
cpu and stays like this. The application is not crashing but does not
respond anymore.

Anyone encountered a similar problem? Or anyone knowing a solution for these
annoying problem?

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,
Wim Simons

Hi Wim,

sounds like an endless loop in case the last datawindow row
is reached searching the linked rows. If you code the delete of a
datawindow row keep in mind that all subsequent rows numbers
decrease. If you use find to search the linked rows that can
lead to an endless loop.

Endless loop? Never! ;-)

Dear Chris,

The endless loop is not in our code but in the dw engine.
In debug, the code is hanging on the below mentioned statement. In the
PBDEBUG file is clearly mentioned that the getitemstring is the last command
processed and then a system dll function is called. This system function is
going in an endless loop since Powerbuilder keeps processing on a 50% cpu.
It is very much looking like a bug in the DW engine, but as far as I can
find, it is not published yet. Problem is that I cannot reproduce it using
a small dummy program. Otherwise I would log it to Sybase for
investigation, maybe I will soon since the bank for which I'm working has a
service contract, but I don't know if I can hand over the application for
tests because it's a critical bank application.

Hopefully someone can help me on this, because I already tried a lot of
stuff.

Best regards,
Wim Simons

> Hopefully someone can help me on this, because I already tried a lot of

The first step is to reduce the complexity - at least for debugging
purposes. You have:

idw_critedria. dynamic of_action( this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0101_id_status_dddw" ), this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0201_id_status_dddw" ), this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0101_id_mode_dddw" ), 2, currentrow)

Why do you need to call this dynamically. You should have a VERY good
reason - and you should carefully consider whether the usage is a result of
a design /decision made years ago that has evolved to a point that
refactoring is needed. As a temporary proof, can you change it (for a known
situation) to not be dynamic. Does that work or change anything?

Call the getitemstring as separate statements, store the return values in
local variables, and then call your of_action function. Does that work or
change anything? If you use constants (again - temporarily and for a known
situation) instead of variables, does that work or change anything?

Did you check the idw_critedria reference to make sure that it was still
valid? Is the value of currentrow valid? By valid, I mean that it is a
number between 1 and the current number of rows in the datawindow. There
have been situations in the past where currentrow was zero. It is always
best to check before using it.

My version of pfc does not have a pfc_rowfocusedchange event for the
datawindow. However, the rowfocuschanged event does call an event of this
name in other classes. Can you provide more information?

"Odd" problems can creep into a PB application when the runtime DLLs differ
from those used to build the application. Something to check.

"Odd" problems can creep into a PB application when using the incremental
build option and the IDE misses an association and forgets to rebuild a
dependent library. Does a full rebuild do anything?

Last, is this something new that just started happening? Have you been
successfully using the SAME code in prior versions (and with the same or
similar data)?

Last (really this time) - Terry Voth has a toubleshooting guide that has
additional suggestions.

Have you regenerated the application? have you rebooted recently? is
this happening on other machines?

But also, are you trying to get the values out of the last row that is
being deleted? are you sure currentrow is >0?

Hi Wim,

I'm sure you have tried such things already so just in case
you haven't:
Whenever I encounter critical PowerScript bahaviour in "complex"
statements like this:

idw_critedria. dynamic of_action( this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0101_id_status_dddw" ), this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0201_id_status_dddw" ), this.getitemstring( currentrow,
"as_kl0101_id_mode_dddw" ), 2, currentrow)

I'm going to analize things making them more simple. In this case
I'd declare 3 string variables and let the getItemString calls fill them
prior to the call the dynamic function of_action. In the call I'd provide
those string variables as parameters.
Another consideration worth a try is wether you can make the call
to of_action static. Should be possible in most situations using a
local variable of a supertype of idw_critedria which has the method
of_action declared.
That shouldn't say nothing about your code which looks ok for me.
But to my experience PowerScript is sometimes a little bit tetchy.

Good luck!
