Hello,
After upgrading from 11.0.0 to 11.0.1 we are getting from
time to time the following exception:
StackTrace:
iAnywhere.Data.SQLAnywhere.SAException.CheckException(Int32
idEx)
iAnywhere.Data.SQLAnywhere.SADataReader.Read()
Message: Communication error
NativeError: -85
Is there some known issue about it? Or some known
workaround?
Thank you,
Igor.

Igor,

It seems that the client has been disconnected from the database. Is
this immediately on start-up, after the client has been running for a
while, after a particular operation...?

See: http://dcx.sybase.com/1101en/saerrors_en11/errm85.html

- What does the database console say? (dbsrv11 -z -o console.txt ...)
- What does the client log say? (-c "UID=dba;PWD=sql;...;LOG=clientlog.txt")
- What exact version of the database are you using? (dbsrv11 -v)
- How is the client connected to the database?

Regards,

Hello Jeff,
Thank you for the response!
The exception occurs when the connection is already
established for some time(several minutes) and some (quite
significant by data amount) data transfer was already
performed without any problems.
Regarding your questions:
version: it was discovered after installing plain 11.0.1
build 2044. We upgraded to 11.0.1 build 2299 but the problem
still persists. However, on the version 11.0.0 we never
experience this problem.
Both console and client logs please find attached. Exception
is visible in the client log, 09:12:06, however the server
log does not have any suspicious messages - the ones at
09:12:27 are caused by debugger session stop after we got a
crash in application.
Thank you for help,
Igor.

Igor,

>> I. 09/03 09:12:27. Database server shutdown automatically after last
database stopped

This is a direct result of the line:

>> I. 09/03 09:10:34. 5: -ga

(See: http://dcx.sybase.com/1101en/dbadmin_en11/ga-database-dbengine.html )

"Specifying this option on the network server causes each database to be
unloaded after the last non-HTTP client connection disconnects. In
addition to unloading each database after the last non-HTTP connection
disconnects, the database server shuts down when the last database is
stopped."

The client then received the following communication error:

>> 09:12:06 [ 1] Communication function i_cs_ProtocolErrorP code 0

Which the server detected as:

>> I. 09/03 09:12:27. Connection ID 1: disconnecting shared memory
client, process id not found
>> I. 09/03 09:12:27. Connection ID 1: Disconnected SharedMemory

client's AppInfo is
IP=10.10.52.57;HOST=PCXP11467-01117;OSUSER=pgom;OS='Windows XP Build
2600 Service Pack
3';EXE=D:\Dev\XMS_SW\XMS_SW_0.9.2_B\Debug\XmsServerGUI.vshost.exe;PID=0x16c0;THREAD=0x127c;VERSION=11.0.1.2299;API=ADO.NET;TIMEZONEADJUSTMENT=120

Meaning that the process was no longer connected via shared memory. Once
all connections were dropped, (and the database was stopped) trying to
reuse a pooled connection would result in the -85.

This appears to be triggered on the client side here:

09:12:06 [ 1] Communication function i_cs_ProtocolErrorP code 0

This error message indicates a problem happening in the command sequence
layer. Basically, the server expects commands to be executed in a
certain order, and they are receiving commands in the wrong order. This
is leading to the error.

There is at least one known fix for this issue, but this was a fix for
ADO.NET versions 9.0.2 and 10.0.1 - which version of the ADO.NET driver
are you using?

Hello Jeff,
Maybe I didn't explain that in more detail, so I will
repeat:
- The disconnection at 09:12:27 is caused by process
termination done by me, due to the exception that occured at
09:12:06 (!) In other words, problem at client log does not
have any trace on server log. Disconnects you see in the
server log are caused by me, when i caught the exception and
stopped recording the logs for you! If that can help, I can
provide you with logs where these messages are occuring with
2-3 hour difference - it matters just on the time i click
"Stop debugging session" button.

Another argument: If that is a disconnection, why then it
works in version 11.0.0? Such error would be reproducable in
all the versions.

What else can we do to help with problem resolution? I can't
exclude the possibility of misuse of some
statements/sequence of statements done on our side, but I am
100% sure there is some kind of regression introduced in
11.0.1 version.

So the disconnecting and stop of the database is completely expected,
and the unexpected part is the:

09:12:06 [ 1] Communication function i_cs_ProtocolErrorP code 0

If this is an urgent issue for you, please open a technical support
case. ( http://www.sybase.com/contactus/support/ ). Technical support
has additional diagnostic tools available to them that can be run to
provide additional information to our engineers. We'll either need some
advanced logging or a reproducible that can show us where the problem lies.

The error message is indicating that this is a problem at the
command-sequence level. Can you provide a small reproducible that can
illustrate this issue?
