I did a clean install of Windows 7 x64 RTM this weekend then
reinstalled SQLAW x64 9.0.2 (my customer is still running 9
so I still have to use it for development).

When I first ran ISql, I got one of those wonderful Java
crash error messages and it closed, but by setting "Run as
administrator" and compatibility to "Windows Vista (Service
Pack 2)" it runs ok. Imagine Vista SP2 being the
"compatible" choice!

However, Sybase Central crashes as soon as I run it, and no
combination of "run as administrator" or Win 7
backward-compatibility settings helps. The error I get is
"The runtime environment could not be found in . Sybase
Central has not been installed properly."

Notice that there is nothing after "The runtime environment
could not be found in" before the period, so it looks like
SQLAW is looking for a registry key or environment variable
that is missing.

Has anyone seen this or have some ideas?

Yes. I have recently seen this same issue with 9.0.2. The problem seems
to be related to the install not creating the correct keys underneath
the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WOW6432Node key. Specifically, the error
will show up immediately after the install "completes" and we try to
start scjview / dbisqlg as "Fast launch" items, and the 32-bit Java
Runtime Environment (JRE) is not configured properly.

You can solve this immediately by putting the following contents into a
"sybasecentral.reg" file and adding it to your registry manually:

====================
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Sybase\Sybase Central\4.3]
"Location"="c:\\Program Files\\Sybase\\Shared\\Sybase Central 4.3"
"Shared Location"="c:\\Program Files\\Sybase\\Shared"
"Additional Classpath"=""
"Language"="EN"
====================

Please also note that SQL Anywhere 9 on Windows 7 is not supported at
this time: http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1002288

Sorry about the previous blank messsage, I'm new to this
group and hit some wrong key.

At any rate, thanks for your quick reply, it seemed to do
the trick. I still have to set Sybase Central to run in
Vista SP2 compatibility mode as Administrator to avoid one
of those Java crash messages, same as I have to do to get
ISQL to run.

I understand that Win 7 isn't officially supported yet but
we are only, what, 22 days away? So far SQLAW 64 bit is the
only Vista-compatible app that I have had any problems with
on Win 7. Must be something to do with Java.

This is possible. We only will officially announce support of an OS once
it's released as GA. Internally, we are testing various SA versions with
Windows 7, but it will be ultimately product management's decision to
support 9.0.2 since it's already in 'Limited' Status (
http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1002288#status ) and will be EOL'd
itself in 122 days ( http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1061840 ).
Engineering may have to release an EBF to get 9.0.2 to 'official'
Windows 7 supported status - we'll have to wait and see what happens.

Glad to hear you're up and running!

Cheers,
