Hello,

I have installed PB 10.2.1 build 9004 Spanish version. I use ODBC to
connect to an Oracle 10 database. I have a problem with decimal numbers.
The problem is the following. If I make a select like the following:

select field1, field2, field3, field1+field2+field3 sumfield from table;

I get the following results in my datawindow:

field1 = 11.3
field2 = 10
field3 = 20
sumfield = 41

When I make an operation in the select of the datawindow involving
numbers I loose the decimals. I can solve this using a computed field,
but if the select uses an aggregate function like this:

select sum(field1) from table;

I can't solve it with computed fields. How can I solve this?

Thanks.

Have you checked source of your DW?
What's column definition?
Have you tried tracing your connection? - this would allow you
verifying what is actually returned from a DB.

The column specification in PB says that field1, field2 and field3 are
decimal(3) and sumfield is number.
In Oracle the datatypes of the fields are number(12,3).

> Have you tried tracing your connection? - this would allow you

In PB sumfield is 41 without decimals, but field1 is 11.3. If I run the
same select in SQLPlus I get 41.3 in the sumfield.

Hi Héctor;

In your DW object .. when you look at the column properties .. are they
all defined as decimal?

It works if you make the sum in a computed field inside the datawindow.
When doesn't work is when you make the sum in the select clause.

The "Instant Client" is part of the O10g installation package .. check out
the Oracle installation guide.
You can also download it from Oracle too ...
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html

PB has supported O10g since 10.5 (maybe 10.0) - so as long as you are on
that release or higher you should see the O10g option in your DB Profile
painter within the PB IDE.

In my DB Profile I only have "ODB ODBC" under "Installed Database
Interfaces", and my ODBC profiles are there. Can I get O10g option from
somewhere?

Thanks.

Either ...
1) You only installed the basic DB interfaces (like ODBC).
- If so, rerun the PB Install and select the "Custom" option.
- Then select all the DB interfaces (at least Oracles).
This will add the missing DB interfaces to your PB environment.

2) You do not have the Enterprise version of PB.
- Then you would only see ODBC
- You would need to upgrade then to use native DB drivers.

My PB version is the Professional one. I tried to install other
interfaces than ODBC, but there isn't. The only option is using ODBC.
Using ODBC interface works to you?

BTW: What provider do you choose when building the DSN connection in the
ODBC Administrator?
Who supplies the driver (in ODBC Admin tool => MS, Oracle,
Intersolv, ....)?

It's provided by Oracle. I tried versions 10 and 11 and both versions fails.

Thanks for your help.

afaik for oracle, when using some expression in the Select statement it is
always represented as "number" column type for the DW object. Nothing
helps - cast/convert, views, to_number... You can however try:
1) to edit the DW source directly and modify the type of sumfield to be
decimal
2) are you sure that 41 is the exact value you get? Have you tried to change
the column's display format or within the scripts - to get the value of the
column into a decimal{3} variable using GetItemDecimal? explore the exact
value...

Ivaylo

I exported the DW to a file and I modified the column type from number
to decimal(3), but I still got 41 instead of 41.3.

I used GetItemDecimal and I got 41 instead of 41.3. What Oracle (or
ODBC) returns to the DW is 41.
