Hi,

I've been having problems starting the adaptive server
anywhere service. As was suggested i've tried to defragment
the hard drive. It didnt help. Infact, at the end of
defragmentation, it said that my database file was one of
the files that could not be defragmented. Anyways, when i
try to start the service, i get a message "The Adaptive
server anywhere - mtrs8 service on Local Computer started
and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they
have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and
Alerts service". I've created a log file by using -o and -z
options. It is attached. What else can i try?
Thanks alot for you help.

Your earlier message showed that your server stopped about 21 seconds
after it started accepting requests:

I. 12/20 13:13:06. Now accepting requests
I. 12/20 13:13:27. Starting checkpoint of "mtrs8" (mtrs8.DB)
at Sun Dec 20 2009 13:13
I. 12/20 13:13:27. Finished checkpoint of "mtrs8" (mtrs8.DB)
at Sun Dec 20 2009 13:13
I. 12/20 13:13:27. Database server stopped at Sun Dec 20
2009 13:13

Your recent message does not show anything after the "accepting
requests" line:

I. 01/24 19:46:15. Now accepting requests

I am assuming the second diagnostic log is full and complete, and did
not get accidentally truncated. That's correct, right?

Servers don't stop on their own "when they have no work to do". They
are either told to shut down normally (the first example above) or
they crash / are crashed abruptly (second example).

Chris' suggestion to check the Windows event log is a good one...
something evil may be happening.

About defragmentation: nothing about this symptom indicates that
fragmentation is the problem... HOWEVER, the "could not be
defragmented" message is interesting. What defragmentation utility did
you use? ...this message may or may not indicate a deeper problem.

How much free space is there on the hard drive?

Have you run a full chkdsk lately?

HI

Thanks Breck for your reply.

I've re-attached the diagnostics log again, just in case.

Also, I've checked the event viewer. and noticed some
errors. I've checked the properties of the error and it
seems like it has something to do with the problem. I've
attached the screenshot of the errors and the property.

I've used the regular windows Disk defragmentor utility.
"Could not be defragmented" was not a popup message. It was
more like a note, next the the files that could not be
defragmentated, after the utility finished defgragmentation
process.

I have about 3GB free on the C drive (and thats where the
databse file is located). The database file takes about
300Megabytes.

I have not ran Chckdsk utility in a while. Should I try and
hope that this will fix the problem?

Note: The server seems to be working fine as far as people
being able to connect to the database, etc. The only
problem I'm having is starting it as a "service."

Thanks
Aron

Hi Aron,

Something is not right here - the screenshot you sent showed there was a
problem with this service at 7:50:26 p.m. on 01/24. But:

====
I. 01/24 19:46:15. Client for NetWare not installed. Not using bindery
I. 01/24 19:46:15. Could not bind to specified address

The server doesn't have any log of the service crashing/restarting
around that time. Was the service actually still running?

Regards,

The built-in Windows defragmenter is rather feeble. Diskeeper is the
gold standard, and contig is second best (free, google it).

Anyway, you've just confirmed that it's very unlikely fragmentation
has anything to do with your symptom.

CHKDSK is always worth running when you're tackling strange problems;
while waiting, you can wave a dead chicken over the keyboard, it seems
to help about as often ( yes, "wave a dead chicken", google it :)

You may have to talk to tech support... sometimes the long lag time in
conversations here is a barrier to success.

The content of prob.txt indicates that the engine started.

Fragmentation might introduce performance issues but it will not prevent
a service from starting.

From my previous post, what does the application event log indicate???
