Good afternoon. I'm getting a rather odd problem. I
recently upgraded from SQL Anywhere 9 to 11. The
installation went well and everything appeared to be
working. My server is running however I am getting problems
connecting to my database even through Sybase Central. I
will be able to connect to my database fine for a bit when
it was first started then eventually I will get the "Request
to start/stop database denied" error when trying to log in.
I get the same error when trying to log into the database
though other ODBC applications.

Any clue what would cause this error to occur on login or
why it thinks I'm trying to start/stop the database server
when trying to log in?

Did you upgrade the database using the steps outlined here:
http://dcx.sybase.com/index.html#1101en/sachanges_en11/v10upgrade-up-sql-any-123456.html

How are you starting the database?
Can you provide the client connection string?

I upgraded the database using the following command.

dbunload.exe -c "DSN=*****;DBN=*****;UID=****;PWD=****;" -an
"C:\Users\******\AppData\Local\Temp\*****.db" -ap 4096 -jr
-o "C:\Users\*****\AppData\Local\Temp\unloadlog.txt" -v -y"

I start the database server through Sybase Central with the
following configuration parameters.

-c 1m
-ti 3000
-z
-o d:\****\*****.txt
-n ***** d:\****\*****.db

The client connection string is

"DSN=*****;UID=*******;PWD=*******"

But like I said, I've also tried connection to the database
through Sybase Central and I get the same error.

Can you provide the information in the unloadlog.txt and in the -o d:\****\*****.txt?

What version of dbunload did you use to rebuild the database? When rebuilding the database into
version 11 it should not already be started.

There are some restrictions to note when rebuilding version 9 or earlier databases using the version
11 tools:

You must disconnect the database from any earlier versions of the database server, and you must shut
down any earlier database servers running on the computer. You must also shut down any version 11
database servers that are running on the computer. If dbunload cannot proceed because it detects any
of these cases, it issues an error and fails.

Do not include the ENG, START, or LINKS connection parameters in the dbunload connection string for
the old database (specified in the -c option). If you specify these parameters, they are ignored and
a warning appears. In the Sybase Central Connect window, do not enter values in the Server Name and
Start Line fields.

You must run dbunload on a computer with direct file system access to the old database (dbunload
must be able to connect to the database using shared memory).

You cannot run a database server named dbunload_support_engine on the computer where the rebuild is
taking place.

The more information you can provide, the easier it will be to determine the problem.

There are a few things to note:

1) You are running 11.0.1.2044. This is the GA release of 11.0.1. We are currently on EBF 2367, so I
would highly recommend you upgrade to ensure all fixes to the database server are included. You can
upgrade by going to downloads.sybase.com and using your mySybase login.

2) In your DSN, the database engine (ENG) parameter you are specifying most likely does not match
the -n value set on the dbsrv11 command line. If you include a database file (DBF) in your database
command line, and the ENG is not found, then it will attempt to autostart the database on the
database server. Given this is the network database server (dbsrv11), unless the user is DBA, then
request is denied. This is controlled by the -gd switch on the dbsrv11 command line:
http://dcx.sybase.com/index.html#1101en/dbadmin_en11/gd-database-dbengine.html

As an example:

dbsrv11 -n test c:\mytestdatabase.db

ODBC connection should specify ENG=test DBN=mytestdatabase and the remainder of the connection
information.

Unless you want to autostart the database on the database server if it is not running, the you can
remove the DBF option from the DSN.
