So we are evaluating Appeon for use, and I am looking for
some potential use scenarios.

1. Can Appeon be used to convert to Java, but only used for
the interface conversion? We are making web services and
J2EE application, but we can leverage our PowerBuilder
programmers and existing application interface for the UI,
but leave the business functions to the new J2EE
development.

2. I see there is Javascript to the browser. Is Eval used?
Is there any JSON communications? Security is a #1 concern,
so we are trying to avoid these types of items.

3. What is the ActiveX and Add-In performing in the browser?
I hear .NET or Java conversion from PowerBuilder, and I am
thinking I can run this code in a JavaWebStart or OneClick.
Yes? No?

Thanks. Sean.

Hi Sean,

1. Can Appeon be used to convert to Java, but only used for
the interface conversion? We are making web services and
J2EE application, but we can leverage our PowerBuilder
programmers and existing application interface for the UI,
but leave the business functions to the new J2EE
development.
(ANS)Yes. Appeon can support Web service, EJB, PB NVO, C/C++
DLL, COM/ActiveX components and .NET/COM components. You can
keep the PB UI and write your business functions to the Web
service.
2. I see there is JavaScript to the browser. Is Eval used?
Is there any JSON communications? Security is a #1
concern,so we are trying to avoid these types of items.
(ANS)To ensure the safety of Internet communications, our
product provides foundational security mechanism to ensure
the data transferred are safe. You can take advantage of the
Appeon built-in encryption and HTTS/SSL to make the app more
secure.
How does Appeon ensure the data secure? Before the data
transfer, the information will first be binary encrypted by
Appeon encryption algorithm and then be secured by using the
DES 56-bit algorithm. During the data transfer, data stream
will first be encrypted with Appeon 128-bit encryption
algorithm, and then secured by MD5 128-bit algorithm. Our
ActiveX is signed by VeriSign Corporation and Appeon product
is widely used and proved secure by hundreds and thousands
of end users and ISVs.
3. What is the ActiveX and Add-In performing in the browser?
I hear .NET or Java conversion from PowerBuilder, and I am
thinking I can run this code in a JavaWebStart or OneClick.
Yes? No?
(ANS) You can download the Appeon Migration Guide from our
Web site to get more in-depth understanding of our product
architecture. The following are my understanding to our
product architecture. I hope it can help you better
understand our product.
Development stage: Appeon Developer generates PBLs as
JavaScript, XML and other languages which can be run on the
Web server.
User running stage: User runs the JavaScript to load the
Appeon ActiveX. Appeon ActiveX interface is responsible for
drawing UI interface, ActiveX is responsible for achieving
PBVM features, such as all kinds of objects and functions
base class, and sending data requests to the Appeon Server.
Appeon Server operates data via the application server
cache, and manages the session etc.
Appeon Web structure is somehow similar to the .NET's
OneClick application, once the Appeon ActiveX is installed,
if the transaction logic of PB code control is as short as
possible, then the concurrent user performance and UI
business performance will be good.

Regards,
Steven
