Have been using advantage client for number of years but have client that
wants to connect, with 4 users, via Remote Desktop to Windows server 2008.

This now means that I need to install and use the Server version.

This is all very new to me :-)

Is there a dummies guide to how to set-up / move from Client advantage to
Server advantage.

I have installed Server advantage on server. This looks all OK since I can
access databasse via ARC.

But now not sure how to access that db from a client PC.

Keep getting 6420 error - the discovery process for the advantage database
server failed. When I try and add connection (via Advantage Data Architect).

Thanks,
Brian

what you need to do is get the right information into ads.ini. also, if you
are using an internet connection, you'll need to first connect as a remote
connection and then turn on internet access for the username you will be
using. you may also need to add a firewall rule to open the port that you
are using (although I'm not sure that's an issue with remote desktop).

if the issue is truly discovery, try adding this to your ini where a.b.c.d
is the IP address of your server and e is the port you are using.

[a.b.c.d]
LAN_IP=a.b.c.d
LAN_PORT=e

that is for a remote connection. if you want an internet connection change
LAN to INTERNET. oh, this also assumes that you used the IP address in
defining your alias in the [Databases] section of the ini. if instead you
used the servername, put the servername between the square brackets in place
of the IP address but leave the address on the IP line.

putting these lines in the ini will avoid the discovery issue. if you still
get an error, something else is wrong.

note that the architect will use an ini in the windows directory unless you
specify somewhere else with an environment variable while your application
will look first in your application directory.
