Hi,

I am looking for tuning guidelines for the CMT hardware, in
my case the SUN T5120. Performance is not good out of the
box but I belive this can be much improved. I compare with
the Sunfire V240 we are replacing. Any documents on ASE 12.5
tuning for CMT is appreciated.

These boxes are not preferred for DBMS.
But I have a T5240 too...
Many have made a few simple suggestions...

1. Turn off all virtual CPUs except one on each core.
cpu 1 running
cpu 2,3,4 off
cpu 5 running
cpu 6,7,8 off
etc...

2. Tune 'runnable process search count" done to a low number like "3".
This will prevent ASE from looking for work when there is nothing to do.
Read about this oiption to understand it.

3. Use as much memory as possible in your caches.
Make use of all of the memory that you can to prevent i/o.

Thanks Cory for your input.

I tried your suggestions but didnt see much improvements. I
have large caches in ASE and get 99-100% cache hit rates so
that seems to work alright.

Still get a lot of CPU load on one strand, (or core, with
your suggestions), no locks in mpstat or prstat -mL and most
importantly still the too long execution times in the
application.

I am getting to the same conclusion as yours, that what I
really need is CPU´s that are quick with serial loads. (as
in ASE engines...) As a matter of fact our old lab V240 is
quicker with this!

Thanks

Håkan
