Our company is still using PB 11.5. We purchased one licence
for 12.0 but judged there was nothing to be gained moving to
it. We're currently considering upgrading to version 12.5
Classic.

As I understand it - and here I'm hoping to be corrected if
I've missed anything significant - 11.5 to 12.5 Classic
gives us:

- Web service enhancements - GetCookie, SetCookie,
SoapPbCookie
- Added RichTextEdit control ClearAll function
- OriginalSize property for DW button & picture controls
- GenerateEqualsNulls database parameter
- Window Control transparent Value and transparency property
- Sharing ADO.NET Connections with .NET
- RTF, Image and XPS Database Blobs in the DataWindow
- AutoWidth Property for columns in a grid datawindow
- User-Drawn controls in DataWindows
- Enabled, Tab Order and Show Focus Rectangle for DW
controls
- Being on a supported version (not that it means much in
our experience)

Disadvantages:

- No ability to create COM / COM+ components
- A truly horrible, frustrating implementation of help, with
an always-on-top window which always opens the wrong size so
you end up having resize the damn thing every single time
you use it.
- Possibly having to fix a few problems introduced by 12.5
in our existing applications

We'd really quite like to move - the licence costs are
budgeted for and we like to keep on fully supported software
when possible - but there's really nothing in that list to
make up for the disadvantages. The loss of COM/COM+ we could
manage, but the terrible implementation of help will be a
daily irritation we can live without.

Can anyone point out something important I've missed? If
not, I'm afraid we'll have to stick with 11.5. Which is a
bit of a shame. I always used to look forward to upgrading
and having new features to use (except when DPB disappeared)
but the last couple of updates have left us cold.

Many thanks,
David

Hi David.

You lose com / com+ object creation in classic, but you can generate
com object from .net version. It's not exactly the same, but sometimes
can be usefull.

Andreas Mykonios.
