Hi

Cache Search Misses appears high on this sysmon on Task
Context Switches Due To: section. However the individual
cache sections arent informative. Can anyone shed light on
improvement? Below is current cache config on 4K pagesize
server.

Total context switches due to cache misses (44623) is approximately the same as your total cache misses (44699), so
those numbers look ok (in so much they are basically the same).

The fact that you have a high *percentage* of context switches due to cache misses merely means that you have relatively
few other reasons for context switches to occur. (Point being that you have to take *percentages* in context to what's
going on in the dataserver.)

As for the reason for the cache misses ... *shrug* ... depends on what operations were being performed on the dataserver
during this 2-minute sysmon monitoring session. If you were running update stats, or creating an index, on a table that
doesn't normally reside in cache then you'll see cache misses (ie, have to go to disk to find the data). There could've
been a query running that had to pull data from a table that's not referenced very often (ie, again, having to pull data
from disk == cache miss).

As for what (if anything) to improve ...

- the 8KB pool in the default data cache wasn't used during this 2-min sysmon session, so that would appear to be a
waste of 200MB of cache

- majority of the turnover in the default data cache is in the 32KB pool, plus you had about 9% of the 32KB pool
activity showing up as discarded MRU buffers; looks like either some maintenance operations that needed to access
not-often-referenced data (in which case there's probably nothing you can do to reduce the cache misses/pool turnover),
or possibly some queries performing large IOs where the volume of data to be accessed is greater than the size of the
32KB pool, ie, using LRU would flush the entire pool so optimizer chooses to use MRU (in which case increasing the size
of the 32KB pool *might* help -- though you'd still need to find out what the queries were to figure out how much data
is being accessed in order to see if a larger pool would actually help)

... there may be other items of interest but that's what I caught on a quick glimpse.

Of course, I probably wouldn't use this one sysmon session to make (m)any configuration changes.

Why not? This sysmon session only ran for a 2-minute period. Who knows what kind of activity goes on during the other
23 hours and 58 minutes of the day, or the other 6 days 24 hours and 58 minutes of the week. This sysmon appears to
have been run towards the end of the business day so making config changes based on potential end-of-day processing may
be detrimental to middle-of-the business day processing, overnight batch processing and/or weekend maintenance cycles.

Point being that before you go making config changes you need to have a bigger picture of what's going on your
dataservers ... and this typically requires sysmon sessions from all periods of processing, analysis of said sysmon
data, and of course a knowledge of what operations are actually running during said sysmon sessions. All of this data
then needs to be sorted/priortized to determine your 'best' configuration settings. (Also keep in mind that you may
find that difference configuration settings may be needed for different parts of the day.)

You can't compare the *percentage* of context switches (due to cache misses) with actual cache misses ... bit of an
apples vs oranges type of comparison.

You can compare the *percentages* of the various context switches with each other.

You can also compare actual cache misses the actual cache hits.

Some examples:

- you have 9 cache misses, 5M cache hits, 9 context switches (due to the 9 cache misses) and 1 other context switch; in
this scenario your 90% of context switches (due to cache misses) sounds bad but really isn't worth worrying about since
the 9 cache misses are mere peanuts compared to total cache hits (NOTE: In this scenario the context switching
percentage is useless in regards to the (non-existent) performance issues with the data cache.)

- you have 1M cache misses, 10K cache hits, 1M context switches (due to the 1M cache misses) and 19M other context
switches; in scenario your 5% of context switches (due to cache misses) doesn't sound too bad, until you realize that
the 1M cache misses is huge compared to only 10K cache hits; in this scenario I'd be worried about my cache
configurations and/or the queries hitting the data cache (NOTE: In this scenario the context switching percentage is
useless in regards to the (potential) performance issues with the data cache.)

While the context switching percentages may look bad/good, they don't really tell you anything specific about the
performance of your data caches.
