Hi All,

I am trying to help a customer with a network issue that has proven very
elusive. If we are running the program on the DB Server, performing this
function executes very quickly. However, if the program is running on the
workstation, the same function takes approximately 5 seconds to complete.
The database operations are really very rudimentary; executing 3 or 4 small
queries and inserting a record into 2 different tables and then requerying
to rebuild the screen. There are no complex joins or any of the like.

The program is written in Delphi using the 8.1 Table components. The
database server is ADS 10.1. Both machines are Win7 64-it with 4+ Gigs of
RAM. The network connection appears to be quick enough when copying large
or multiple files.

We have done the following to try and troubleshoot the issue:
- Ensured all firewalls, anti-viruses, and malware scanners are disabled
- Made sure that the ADS.INI file includes the correct IP and Port
- Attempted to force the connection to use TCP using the ADS.INI file
- Attempted to force the connection to use IPX using the ADS.INI file
- Enabled compression using the ADS.INI file
- Disabled compression uses the ADS.INI file
- Monitoring the network bandwidth and usage doesn't show that the
connection is being taxed.

The client is very annoyed about the delay as this is a function that they
have to do 100s of times a day and the delay is causing disgruntalment in
the staff. We have many network installations and have not heard of anyone
having this much of a delay. The have two separate installations with the
same issue, but looking at the setup has not revealed any obvious
differences to a typical network setup.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
- Trevor B

this could be an SMB2 issue. Could you please try setting following
registry keys?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanworkstation\P
arameters
FileInfoCacheLifetime DWORD 0
FileNotFoundCacheLifetime DWORD 0
DirectoryCacheLifetime DWORD 0

That's a good thing to check. And if I'm remember correctly, you can avoid
the delay in your application if you turn off rights checking (assuming SMB2
does indeed turn out to be the problem). Set AdsTableOptions.AdsRightsCheck
to false. That turns off the client side existence checking of tables.

Hi Mark,

I believe that we already set RightsCheck to false on all of our Tables and
Query objects.

Thanks again.

Hi,

The tech article seems to be about File Sharing, does this still apply when
using ADS? I will try it and let you now.

Thanks again.

this is at least one of the workarounds customers reported on bad
performance

Hi Joachim,

I did, finally, have a chance to try out those registry settings.
Unfortunately, they did not make any perceivable difference in the response
time.

Thanks in advance,

It was a shot in the dark. Some customers reported that this solved
their performance issues.

I'd suggest to open a support ticket to nail it down.
