Hi,

We have both 12.5 and 15.0 Sybase ASE servers in our company, for the
ease of development, we setup another developer edition of Sybase 15.5
ASE server in another PC. However, when we insert some data into the
15.5 sybase server with JDBC client (with connection string
charset=big5), we encounter this exception:

Error converting characters into server's character set. Some
character(s) could not be converted.

So we search in google and found to run "set char_convert off" to get
off this problem, however, all chinese characters become garbage.

This situation do not occur in our 12.5 and 15.0 servers (these two
servers are setup by our DBA and the 15.5 developer sybase is installed
by our programmer)

We want to figure what are the difference in 15.5 sybase and the
12.5/15.0 sybase, specially in character set configuration?

How can I make the 15.5 behave like our 12.5/15.0 server?

I tried to run the sp_helpsort, seems almost the same outputs:

Would someone help me to solve this problem?

Thanks,
Ray

Take a look at your dataservers' config settings regarding character sets and/or unicode ...

enable unicode conversions
enable unicode normalizations
disable character set conversion

... see if there are any differences between the 2 dataservers.

Hi,

Would you provide commands to let me check for this? I am not dba of
sybase and do not know much how to do the following operations?

Many thanks,
Raymond

There are difference in some values:

From sybase 15.0, the Config Value and RUN VALUE of "enable unicode
conversions" and "enable unicode normalization" are 0, and "default
character set id" parameter default value is 1

From sybsae 15.5 developer, the config value and Run value of "enable
unicode conversions" and "enable unicode normalization" are 1 and
""default character set id" parameter default value is 2

What does it mean? Should I config the 15.5 developer sybase same values
as 15.0 sybase? Any command that can do this?

Thanks

You are interested in the Run values, ie, what the dataserver is currently using.

As a first step I'd reconfigure the 15.5 configuration Run values to be the same as the 15.0 configuration Run values.

matched with sybase 15.0 parameter values.

Now the chinese characters are ok now.

Many thanks :)
