Hello gurus,

Adaptive Server Enterprise/12.5.3/EBF 12461 ESD#2/P/NT (IX86)/OS
4.0/ase1253/1904/32-bit/OPT/Tue Mar 22 17:23:51 2005

Our old machine is caughing and wheezing so I need to configure a new
server machine and migrate the whole caboodle (Server, logins ,
databases etc.) to it.

Online research shows that the way to go is to use SybMigrate (Rob's
site: http://www.sypron.nl/new12501.html#sybmigrate )

In my $SYBASE/ASE-12_5/bin folder I only have sybmigrate.bat and
sybmigrate (no file extension) files. Attempting to run the batch file I
get the message :
SYBASE_JRE is set. Use SYBASE_JRE as JAVA_HOME.
Exception in threa "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
com/sybase/util/ds/ldap/LDAPWarning

What's going on? How do I start the GUI version of SybMigrate?

Any help appreciated.

Daniel.

Looks like it's a bug:

http://search.sybase.com/kbx/changerequests?bug_id=395119

Any idea where I can get the EBF to upgrade to 12.5.4?

Even setting the filter to 'in all months' offers the oldest download as
EBF 13923 which needs me to already be at 12.5.4

Daniel.

The link you provide shows a few steps to take to workaround the issue ... did you implement those steps and it still
did not work?

Do you have a support contract with Sybase? If so, you should be able to open a case and obtain a link to the 12.5.4
downloads (either in SPDC and/or on the EBF downloads page).

But before you jump through a lot hoops trying to get sybmigrate to work, you might want to provide more details of the
old and new systems ... it may be that there are easier/simpler solutions to your issue.

- OS and hardware of the old and new machines?

- version of ASE you plan to use on the new machine (sqlsrvr -v) ?

- are all of your database devices in the form of files in the filesystem (or is that a stupid question for Windows)?

- do you plan on using the same dataserver page size, character set and sort order in the new dataserver?

- number and size of the databases?

Assuming like hardware, software, ASE versions, dataserver page size, charsets/sort orders ... and assuming all
dataserver devices are in the form of files ... it could be as easy as shutting down the current dataserver (to allow a
clean copy of the devices...), copying the dataserver device files to the same exact directories on the new machine,
modifying the sql.ini on the new machine, and starting the dataserver on the new machine.

There are lots of options for moving the dataserver ... some relatively easy, some quite complicated ... it all depends
on the details for the old and new systems.

Hi Mark,

many thanks for your valuable information.

I have not set up the new machine yet....was just researching what I
would need to do. (I actually have 2 existing servers and plan to
replace both but the versions, OS etc. are identical.)

-The existing OS is Windows 2003 server. I expect the new server to run
windows 2008 Server. The existing pagesize is 2. I can't change the
pagesize because I use dumps from other branch offices in a couple of db's.

-If I buy ASE 15.7 and install that on the new server will migration be
any easier?

-I have 12 databases on the dataserver with sizes ranging from 1GB to
4GB (data and log)

I have just ordered Rob Verschoor's books and look forward to some ideas
from them as well.

Best,

Daniel.
