I have an old Delphi 7 / Advantage 9.10 application which now uses a
DBF table (it coexists with a Foxpro application.) This table,
Display.dbf, was created with Data Architect. The application is using
Local Server.

When attempting to do a query against this table the following error
occurs:

"Not a Valid Index Field Name"

There is no error number. ADS_Err.DBF has an entry with an Err_class of
1012 and an Error_Code of 7014.

I have tried the simplest possible query, "SELECT * FROM Display" (the
table name). I have tried this when the table has a simple two column
Index,"Target+Prority", consisting of two short character columns, and
without an index. I have also tried it using a simple WHERE statement.
All give the above error. The error occurs when making the query active.

All files for the table are in the same directory. The table only has 4
records during the tests. No other programs are accessing the table
while the test is underway.

The application works perfectly when using SQL from Data Architect so
that would appear to eliminate any problems with the table or the SQL
statement.

I have very limited experience using DBF tables but evey property seems
correct. I have exhausted the places to look and would appreciate any
suggestions about what to try or what is causing the error.

I have attached a zip file containing the table files.

Hi Tom,

If the query works correctly in Data Architect it can't be a problem
with the table itself, as you say. So it would be more useful for you
to show us the Delphi code that is causing the problem, and the relevant
bits from the .dfm form.

Thank you for responding.

Attached are zip files containing the table files and the datamodule
files. The pertinent code from the main form is shown after the end of
the data module code.

Hi Tom,

in your query component the property IndexFieldNames is set to '.' (in DFM
file).
Can this be the reason?

Jürgen

Yes you're right Jürgen.

Tom: in fact the exact error message you saw should have been:

"DisplayQry: Not a valid index field name:."

Hello Jurgen,

You and Dougles are absolutely correct! My eyesight is apparently not
as good as it once was.(My excuse is that I have been working on a
small laptop rather than my usual development machine.) I must have
inadvertently set the property that way. That is the good news.

The bad news is that setting the property to blank does not solve the
problem and the same error persists. My understanding is that this
property is used when a master-detaile situation is present or when
special optimization is needed. Neithr case is present in this
implementation so I intended to leave the property blank. Is that wrong?

In any case, the same error occurs when the propery is changed to blank
so I am still stymied. This is a proof of concept program to
dynamically create an extensive HTML file consisting of text, imbeddded
images, links, etc. and show it in an Intrawb window. I have not yet
reached the "difficult" code because I am stalled on getting a simple
query.

Thhanks for the help that you and Douglas are providing; maybe you have
another suggestion I can try.

Regards,
Tom

I just encountered the strangest thing that has occurred in all my
years using Delphi. After reporting that the change did not solve the
problem, I decided to experiment with the property. On a hunch, I
checked the DFM file for the data module and discovered that the
changes entered into the property in the visual component were not
getting recorded in the DFM file. This was the case despite using Save
for the file or Save All. The property in the DFM file still contained
the '.'. I tried this several times and still get the same situation.
When I manually changed the DFM file, All is well.

Any way, back to work and thank you again for your help!

Regards,
Tom
