I've heard LINQPad is a great tool for learning LINQ but I don't know
how to connect to ASE 15 from it. I was wondering if anyone else has
used it. I see lots of drivers for other db's but not Sybase.
http://www.linqpad.net/

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

The Software Developers Kit contain the ASE ADO.NET Provider. You should be
able to use this.
ASE 15.X should also include the PC Client software installation that you
can also use.

Thank you,
-Paul

I tried specifying the ado.net driver but still can't figure it out. I
must be doing something wrong.

Hey Paul,

I got it!

I used the option to add a connection using the option to specify a
typed data context from my Entity Framework dll. Its probably a bit more
convoluted than connecting directly but it does work for my purposes.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

What version are you usiong of the ASE ADO.NET Provider? Using the 15.7
version makes things easier in terms of deployment.

Not sure what you did here - check teh Software Developers Kit 15.5 New
features guide - ESD#8 or higher has some information regarding EDM.

Thank you,
-Paul

Hey Paul,

I've upgraded to 15.7 ESD#2. How can I verify my version?

I still don't see a way to connect to the db without specifying an EDM
inside of Linqpad.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Under $SYBASE/DataAccess (or DataAccess64) is ADONET\dll

Look at the file version for Sybase.AdoNet2.AseClient.dll this is the
provider dll.

It should read 2.157.104.0

Installation should also register the DLL in the system.

I am not too familiar with LINQ. Maybe you can open a Tech Support case.
I've only used LINQ myself after creating the EDM, and then I can write
source code from that point. However, I would think there is some other
way, just don't know offhand on how to do it.

Thank you,
-Paul

Hi Paul,

I was checking the version of the wrong dll. I assumed
Sybase.AdoNet4.AseClient.dll was the .Net 4 driver and
Sybase.AdoNet2.AseClient.dll was the .Net 2 driver. Thanks for
correcting me.

BTW I am on the correct version.

Thanks,
Mark
