Hi,

We have migrated an environment onto ASE 15.7 and we do
log-shipping to DR of this environment.
Problem is Application team often wants us to do alter
tables, which causes the dump tran failures as it is
non-logged operation.
It is very difficult to take the full dumps every time we do
this as it happens very often(few times a day).

Is there any work around we can do with this without causing
dump tran failures. Thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Raj

Sorry, Forgot to mention it's not live yet. So, we are
foreseeing this issue.

Cheers,
Raj

Rather than using ALTER TABLE to add or delete a column,
you can do it manually: create a new table with desired layout
and insert the data into it from the old table, then
drop the old table. Use sp_rename to give the new table
the old table's name, create triggers and indexes,
drop and rebuild any dependent stored procedures.

At some point it should be reasonable to make an agreement
with your Application team that schema changes only
occur during regularly (perhaps nightly or weekly)
maintenance windows.

What is the exact version of your ASE ?. There was a presentation in last
TechWave which mentioned about a new feature
for alter table without data copy to be intoduced in future release of ASE
15.7

http://www.sybase.com/files/Product_Overviews/ASE-15.7-Enhancements-in-Operational-Scalability.pdf

One of the upcoming 15.7 ESDs might have this feature included

I use the new feature "alter table without data copy" in
ASE15.7.
Basically, you need to turn on DB option "full logging for
alter table" or "full logging for all", please ensure your
logsegment is big enough.
