Has anyone moved up to ASE 11.5 from SQLA with image data? I have a lot of
"testing" to perform on replication (both with ssremote and rep server), PB
image access, etc. and I can't seem to find a way to get my image tables
from SQLA to ASE 11.5. BCP doesn't like any format I seem to "dump" from
SQLA, and I have a confirmed bug with Powerbuilder's pipeline process.

Would really like to get past this so I can move on to (probably) bigger
problems :). Dont want to use a 4GL app to move the data, cause I know it
would take too long when I need to make the switch on production. We have a
table of inmate photos (2 jpegs each row - front/side) with 16,000 rows.
These photos have replicated up to a consolidated SQLA db from 3 remote
sites with a digital camera. These 3 sites are pilot sites, and we are in
the process of rolling out the camera system to 25 more. By the time I am
ready to use 11.5 as a production consolidated site, I can't imagine how
many records will be in this table. So a process of retrieve from on db,
then insert into the other db, etc, etc. is not going to cut it.

Scot,
I have just completed a similar project, moving 4.5 GB of blob data from
SQLA to System 11. I did end up getting the pipeline to work, but like you,
I could not afford the time constraints of using an external application.
Here are the steps that I had to use.

1. Upgrade the SQLA db to the most current version. I don't know if you
can get 5.5.04 yet, I used 5.5.03. This will also upgrade the SQLA
OpenServer, which is used to enable BCP out.

2. Ensure that you are running the most current OpenClient for ASE. We are
using System 11, and had to get the ASE OpenClient from Sybase in order for
this to work. I believe it was 11.1.

3. In SQLA, remove any table or column check constraints that are on the
table(s) you need to BCP out. If you don't remove these, you will receive a
'not enough host variables' error.

4. Start the SQLA OpenServer. You can use ASE's ISQL to test and ensure
that a connection can be made.

5. Now you can use BCP, and BCP out from the SQLA OpenServer. I had to use
character format on the BCP out. If you have blobs larger than 32 K, it
doesn't matter on the SQLA/OpenServer side. All the data will be output
with or without the -T switch.

6. Now you will have the file(s) that you can BCP in to the Sybase server.

Hope this helps,
Larry

Larry:

Got further with your suggestions than I have with any other. Problem I
have now is that my blob columns are getting truncated at 32768 no matter
what I put in for the -T switch. This is not going to work if I can't get
past this problem. Any clues? The table I'm working with has two blob
columns. Should that matter?

TIA,
Scot

Hi Scot,

How do you know that your text is getting truncated in the SQL Server?
If you
are doing a select of the text column, then by default you
will only get 32k returned to you unless you execute the
set textsize command.

It's an image datatype.

select datalength(image_col1),datalength(image_col2) from
tableowner.tablename
