18 March 2013: Recent updates at www.sypron.nl

I've been quiet for a while about my web site. That's
because my day job at SAP/Sybase is keeping me quite busy:
as part of SAP, there are opportunities for ASE now that
we haven't seen in a long time, and naturally we're
trying to make the most of that.
In the mean time, I think I am also starting to see signs
of renewed interest in ASE, Replication Server and IQ.
For example, over the past few months there has been an
increase in job ads for Sybase DBA/developers -- not just
in India, but in the USA and in European countries too. See
for example the LinkedIn groups aimed at Sybase (although,
as with any useful medium, there is too much spam here).
Another indication is the increased number of emails I'm
getting from recruiters who are enthousiastically telling
they found the perfect new role for me (obviously, without
checking my CV/resume first).
And thirdly, I'm seeing very encouraging increased interest
in my Sybase books (see below). While that interest has never
gone away, it has definitely gone up over the past 6 months
or so, and the proportion of customers who buy my books
for the first time, has also grown.

All good news then.
Let's see what 2013 will have in store for us...

Here are the recent changes at www.sypron.nl:

This month's quiz question is about a
trick to perform database dumps to the NULL device...

The Sybase newsgroups at forums.sybase.com will be closed
down by the end of March 2013. I have added information
about the new location of these forums at SAP's SCN web site.

The stored procedures to grant SA rights to non-SA users was
updated to also run on ASE 15.7 (thanks to Olav Georg Karlsen
for highlighting the issues that stopped it from working)

Fixed an integer-overflow bug in sp_mda_diskIO
(thanks to Rick Skoroszewski for highlighting the bug).

Changed the 'sp_' prefix for the SQL UDF examples to 'sp_f_'
