Hi

If you read topic "Valid date checking" (28/10 2002) on the ase.general
newsgroup you will find more info/background for this suggestion. I
"repost" the suggestion here since I got no response on the suggestion
there:

I guess a lot of sybase users often need such a function:

When a date is a input parameter to a stored procedure (and it is
unaccebtable to define the parameter as datetime since invalid dates must
be handled).
It is often necessary to load potensially invalid dates from files etc.
into sybase character columns.
Etc.

Is there a "feature request" for such a function? If not, could someone
submit one? The function could also do a convert, syntax suggestion for new
function:

date_check_and_convert(char_expression,input_style,output_style)

where the new function could return NULL for invalid dates.

Regards
Kai Tomren

Hi Kai,

There is an existing feature request for a date-checking function,
CR 86428.

Thanks!
Is the description and status of this and other CR's available on this site
somewhere?

Hi Kai,

Somewhere around May 15th of 2002, we started making descriptions of
some new CRs (defects and feature requests) available off the
"solved case descriptions" page at
http://info.sybase.com/CGI-BIN/OM_ISAPI.DLL?clientID=508848&softpage=Solved_Cases
with a keyword search engine. However, it only applies to CRs open after
that
date, i.e. only CR numbers larger than ~279592, so you won't find 86428
there.

One of the projects I am working on is cleaning up and validating older
feature
requests, as part of that process I typically close out the old CR and
open a new,
one against current versions (cross-referenced to the old CR), and add a
visible description. So over time, you will see more and more show up
through
the search engine. There is also a group reviewing newly filed feature
requests,
with a goal of providing some status on our plans for it within 90
days. If you
look at CR 286794, for instance, you will see an example of such review
feedback.

I consider this a great improvement over previous handling of feature
requests,
which didn't provide much feedback at all.

Thanks again.
Looks very good, maybe you in the next version should introduce a "vote for
importance"/rating on the CR (to know how important the sybase
customers/users consider a spesific CR)!

For ISUG members, such a system is already in place: they can vote on ASE
enhancement requests at www.isug.com.
