I'd like to see a table by table option to change the way that data is put
down on pages. Right now, everyone stores rows of data on pages, which is a
nice compromise for update and select performance. The problem is that the
data can only be physically sorted one way and if you only need data from
one column you have to either pile through everything else in the table or
create a covering index.

I would like an option to store each column of a table in its own contiguous
page chain and have each column clustered.

The way you describe is the way Sybase IQ works. Check out the IQ
newsgroup.
