aha - that's one of mine (the error message I mean).

The 'last chance exception handler' is a piece of code that catches any
software exceptions that happen outside of the normal stack frame exception
handlers (the ones that give you a stack trace in the error log). This was
added fairly recently, and it catches things that previously would have gone
un-noticed.

Since it's gone in, we found that indeed there is an event that can happen
during server shutdown that causes an exception. This is right at the very,
very end of the shutdown - all devices and network connections are closed and
there is no risk to your data. In fact without the new exception handler
catching and reporting this problem you wouldn't even know you had a problem
as the server was about to exit anyway.

So apart from the rather scary message, there is nothing to worry about in
this case (if this message appeared in the middle of normal running then
that's another matter). I have fixed the root cause of the exception in 12.5
and this needs to be back-ported to 12.0. If you want to track this work then
open a case with your friendly local tech support. The bug reference is CR
233054.

cheers,
tonyi (ASE Engineering)

Is this error occurring frequently?
This is an OS issue and it's generated from the OS (NT)
Your system admin should check application event log and see if there are any errors during
the similar time recorded in the ASE errorlog.
You should also run dbcc's on your databases and verify that things are not corrupt. (But
it doesn't sound like a corruption issue)

FWIW, I run on Win2K Professional also and I do not see any errors like that and I am
running the same ASE SWR that you are.

When this problem was first noticed on 12.5, the bug reporter said it happened about 1 in 5
times during shutdown. In my tests running continuous stop/starts it happens about 1 in 100
times. It's a timing window thing and depends critically on what else is going on on the
machine.

Thanks, Jim.

The error appears after each and every shutdown of the ASE server. But the
rebooting of the ASE server is perfectly normal.

The event log does not show anything wrong.

The error log says something about ntdll.dll. In my case, the file is
located in c:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 and its size is 486,672; date 27/jul/2000
(sevice pack 1 has been applied). May I know the size, date and placement
of your ntdll.dll? And do you have W2K service pack 1 installed?

Thank you,
Stefan
