Hi
When I go to create a database using sybase central wizard, following the
help and using the default settings i.e. "create a database on this machine
(a new server will be started automatically)" it throws an error "Unable to
start server" which then gives a more detailed stacktrace showing an
internal error as follows;

Is this a bug or something stupid I'm doing???
thanks
Ronan

Hi Robert
The Version is 8.01 - what is / how do I find the build number??
I can create a new database on the already running personal server
sample....

Another question I have with SQL Anywhere. I see it supports a datatype
'Bigint' which roughly corresponds to a long in java. Does ASE not support
this datatype?? (we are using SQL Anywhere to store a subset of data and
then copy it into ASE every 15 minutes). What would be the best method for
storing a Java long in ASA and then copying it into ASE.

thanks
Ronan

In Sybase Central you can check Help|About
This will show the ASA 8 Plug-in version which will be similar
to 8.0.1.3044. In this example, 3044 is the build number.

Then the probable issue is permissions on the server. By default,
you have to already be connected to a database on the server as an user with
DBA permissions in order to start another database. Since the initialization
process needs to start the database, this restriction applies. There are 2
solutions. The first is to connect to an existing database as DBA before
running the Create Database wizard against the network server. The second is
to start the network server with the -gd all switch which tells the server
to let any user start a database on the server.

I would suggest trying a numeric(19,0). That would be decimal(19,0) in
ASE.
