Hi,

Is there some CR open for the dump/load process across platforms as is
supported in case of Oracle so that we do not have to do the dirty work of
regeneration of all databases in case of migration.

Thanks.

Yes. There were actually a number of them, I recently closed all the
duplicates I
could find, leaving CR 225718 open. The priority on this has generally
been low
because the functionality is already provided by the third-party product
SQL-Backtrack.

Time to upgrade the priority. SQL-Backtrack is not free. Oracle's export
utility comes with the database. (bcp isn't good enough for this job,
whereas export will cover most situations.)

An extension to bcp would help; a way to bcp out/in all user objects at
the same time? But then I suppose we'd need to include sysprotects in
there, and what about sysusers? Do we overwrite what is currently in
there?

I can see this being non-trivial, but I can also see how this would be
useful.

A question to end with (excuse my ignorance). Is it possible to dump a
database on (eg) Solaris to a remote backup server on (eg) HPUX? And if
so, is the format at the remote backup server that for Solaris or HPUX?

Perhaps this would be a way to provide cross-platform dumps?

/Mike

Starting with 12.5.0.1 we provide Migration Tool which migrates
meta-data and data. With 12.5.0.3 MigTool's crossplatform.

Hi Stefan,

Is it possible to load a database from Sybase 11.5.1 on HP-UX to Sybase
12.5.0.3 running on say, Solaris or AIX.

This has been discussed at length in other news groups on this server.
Pls check them for details on cross-platform DUMP/LOAD (dumps are
physical copies so success depends on endian-ness and representation of
floating point numbers). Regardless whether it's possible it is not
supported by Sybase.

To use MigTool 12.5.0.1 or later is required since it uses functionality
delivered in that release (select...into existing...).

HTH,

/Stefan

It is possible to dump from a Solaris ASE to an HPUX backupserver; the
format of the dump is still that for Solaris. The contents of the dump
are a series
of pages, at the dump level there is no awareness of tables, rows,
columns,
os-specific datatypes such as float (although that is pretty much
standardized now).
The main barrier to platform-independent dumps is the differences
between
big-endian and little-endian architecture.

Hi,

When a third party vendor is able to provide this feature with its
products, why is it so difficult for Sybase to provide it considering that
it would ease it most users job.
