I wanted to start a discussion on changing the name of the sql server newsgroups. The
product is no longer named SQL Server so it is a bit inappropriate to still use the old
name. Plus we tend to attract some questions about the Microsoft database here because of
the name of the newsgroup.

So what do you think? Should we change the name? Is it worth the pain?
What should the name be? sybase.public.ASE.*?

I'm all in favor of renaming "sqlserver" to "ase" in the newsgroup
names.

In the past when there has been a name change the old newsgroup gets one final "Don't post
here. Go see the xyz newsgroup instead." and then it it turned to read-only. I don't
think we'll be able to move the messages over but I'll explore that possibility.

It sure makes more sense to me to change the name. Just wondering why the
name SQLServer is used in the NT "Services" start up....

I was wondering why it had taken so long for someone to suggest it :-)

I think that the change would help.

No way! I think we should be as obtuse as possible!

And if we can piss off some Micro$oft users along the way well, that's just

NOT!

I vote for a change.

Hi,

I had just recently taken the Fast Track and SA classes at the Emeryville
learning center to learn more about ASE for my new position. The dataserver
was being reference as ASE during training. I think it would help me and
other to locate the appropriate newsgroup more easily if the newsgroups name
and product name are identical/similar.

There will be a few issues if it gets done.

Firstly, do you want to keep the old posts? I'd imagine you'd want to.
Every post contains within it the name of the newsgroup(s) it was posted
to. You'd have to change every post to reflect the new name. If the newsgroups
are on a Unix platform, its easy enough to run 'sed' over them. If not, good
luck.

The change will require some downtime. Keep in mind international users
when doing this (a Sunday, US time, would probably have the least impact).

If you start afresh, it might be better to keep the old groups but make them
read only. They are a valuable reference and shouldn't be lost.

If you make the change, can you drop the 'public' in the name? I would think
that 'sybase.ase.general' is good enough. Private newsgroups can keep the
word 'private' (or 'beta' as required).

Everyone using a newsreader will need to resubscribe to the new groups. If
the posts are migrated, readers will need to edit their newsrc files to suit
(this way they can keep their bookmarked posts).

Some newsreaders (like Netscape) keep cache files of post headers. I suspect
that simply renaming these files won't work (this would mean that every post
that gets migrated will be reread by clients. This may have an undesirable
impact on the newsserver). In that case, its easier to start from scratch
(so keeping the old groups intact would be less painful - but we'll no doubt
get people trying to post to them).

Regardless, I suggest that we follow the Usenet practice and do a CFV (call
for votes) after the CFD (call for discussion). Its usually the instigator
who ends up tallying and posting the yes/no vote count.

Bear in mind that the Sybase newsgroups aren't Usenet, so the
rules are a bit different here.

Yes, but you don't want to do things arbitrarily. The
etiquette on Usenet was worked out years ago and works
quite well. That's why I suggested we follow them.

But personally, i'd like to see more than just a simple
name change. I don't understand what upgrades have to
do with configuration (for ASE), while migration is a
separate newsgroup. The way I see it, upgrades and
migrations should have been together. Configuration
could have been absorbed into the administration
newsgroup. I'm sure there are other issues in the
other newsgroups here.

One quick newsgroup name change suggestion: Since OmniConnect no longer
exists, how about replacing that newsgroup with something like
ASEnterprise.CIS?

Yes, I think it is. Maybe the newsgroup can be called 'econnect+cis'.

No, Omni is now ASE Component Integration Services. OmniConnect
(previously, aka. Omni) functionality was first integrated into ASE 11.5 as
CIS but was also available to customers as a separate product. OmniConnect
as a separate product was EOL'd as of 11.9.2. Starting with v12, ASE/CIS is
the upgrade path for OmniConnect users. ASE/CIS is one component of the
EnterpriseConnect Data Access Integrated Product Set.

BTW, EnterpriseConnect is not a specific product, it's bundle of products
(i.e. IPS). There are actually two EnterpriseConnect IPSs - one for Data
Access and one for Data Movement.

In case it helps, here's a blurb on ASE/CIS from the Sybase web site under
the description of the EnterpriseConnect Data Access IPS (Integrated Product
Set):
"(ASE) Component Integration Services ASE/CIS (formerly known as
OmniConnect), working with DirectConnect allows applications to get and
change data on multiple heterogeneous data servers. ASE/CIS provides a
consolidated view of the enterprise data, without the need to know where the
data is located or the type of data. A single request can access and combine
data from multiple data sources across the enterprise, as though the data
were stored in a single database."

We could retire newsgroups for products that have been
EOL'd. The apt-dwb-sqr newsgroup comes to mind. The
peoplesoft newsgroup is next to useless - I seldom see
anything about peoplesoft in it. It seems to be mostly
hit by the same sort of people who post erroneously to
the EP and Open Switch newsgroups (via the web interface).
I don't comprehend the distinction between the rep-agent
and rep-server newsgroups. Perhaps just one newsgroup
called replication would suffice. The NT and Netware
newsgroups can be merged into one called 'pc'. This one
can be a catchall for all server and client issues on
PCs (especially for those issues that don't belong in
the open_client newsgroup - which seems to focus on
OC programming).

Hmm... wouldn't this lead to people posting Linux topics there, or are you
thinking that the Linux group would be folded in too? I agree that the
NetWare one is now a little defunct since the product is EOL'd. A 'VMS'
one would make more sense (maybe there is one !?) since there is actually a
version of ASE supported on VMS.

I also cannot see any real mile between having both "administration" and
"general". Most people don't seem to be able to make a clear distinction.

I would think that Linux users are a little more cluey. If they see
a Linux newsgroup, wouldn't they go for it rather than a PC one?

Off hand it sounds good. But then we'll see a posting in the future about
"correctly" changing the sybase.public.sqlanywhere... newsgroups to
sybase.public.ASA... newsgroups. (Who knows, maybe an intelligent marketing
whiz from Sybase reads some of these postings. Note my qualification.) In
which case will this be easier, clearer, etc. to distinguish the two classes
of forums? My guess is yes but I'm far from sure.

Which part - "whiz" or "intelligent"?

Hmmm ... "sybase.ase.general" and "sybase.asa.general" seem a little
more confusing to me (only 1 character difference).

Yes, that could work, although my own perference is to keep them short.
I can't see the need for "general" though. Someone else mentioned the
blurred distinction between it and the admin newsgroup. Perhaps we
should have admin and tsql.

Well, I guess we just won't let them change the SQL Anywhere newsgroup to ASA. <g>

Sounds good. Copy all the postings to the new one?
And may be leave the old one out there for a while
with a message directing to the new one. That way
prodigal sons (and daughters) can still find their way
home.

It did look me a while to find the sybase ASE newsgroup the first time I joined here and I
wasn't sure I was in the right group until I looked the all the posts. Doh!!!

I think the name change will help new members to find the group easier.

Sounds fine, but ...... something else to remember ..... the Sybase web site will need to be
changed to search the new groups. Also, there is a way on the site to subscribe to the news
groups. That would need to change too!

Yeh, I think "we" should change the name, getting rid of
the sql server bit.

Your suggestion is good Jim.

Also, I do think the groups could be streamlined, say one for
administration and one for each platform would be sufficient
and also I think easier to post and browse the "latest news"
