Hi All,

I am running dbsrv7 on a Windows XP Pro machine. Everything runs fine
except that the server will not shut down properly. I thought it might
have something to do with running an older version of the server engine,
so I tried downloading and installing version 9 developer edition.

Once I installed the developer version I ran the network server example.
It also will not shutdown properly. I then tried the personal server
example. It also will not shut down.

When I say it will not shutdown, I mean that dbl clicking on the system
tray icon and bringing up the server console, then clicking on the
shutdown button doesn't shutdown the server. I have to shut down the
process using the operating system.

Any ideas as to why this might be? I can't seem to find any other posts
regarding this problem.

George

I have a vague memory of some firewall programs that modified the
wsock32.dll on the system and caused problems along this line. If you check
the properties of this file (located in c:\winnt\system32), go to the
version tab, and in the "other version information" area click on "Company
Name", who made this DLL?

PS : It always helps to post the exact version and build number of ASA that
you are using.

I downloaded version 9 developer edition last night. Whatever that
version is, is the version that I tried. The version 7 version is 7.0.1

You can find the exact version number using the command "dbeng9 -v".
The version available from the download site can be updated from time to
time, so most of us in the newsgroups aren't sure exactly what build is
available at a given time.

Can you also post the version and company info of wsock32.dll as Reg asked?

I am running Zone Alarm Pro, but have the settings to allow both
versions through the firewall.

The servers start and run ok, they just won't shut down.

Can you shut Zone Alarm off completely just for a test? There is a
possibility that ZA is doing something to the TCP/IP stack that causes
problems.

How are you trying to shut down the server?

Yup saw an old archived post on dbforums about someone else having this
problem, and another post asking to do the same thing. So I did it. I
shut down ZoneAlarm and tried it again. No luck. It doesn't seem to have
anything to do with ZoneAlarm. The shutdown still doesn't work, even
without ZoneAlarm running.

I shutdown ZoneAlarm.
Brought up task manager and made sure that no dbeng or dbsrv tasks were
still running.
Tried running my tasks which are to:
1) dbinit a new database. Which seems to run dbeng to create the
database and then shuts it down, but in this case doesn't shut down
dbeng.
2) then start dbsrv7 with a database file etc.

Then once the dbsrv is running I tried to shut it down using the db
console shutdown button. The database seems to be getting shut down, but
the dbsrv7 process is not shutdown. And neither is the dbeng process
which was launched by dbinit.
