I have a customer who is running VMware. For both ADS 6.x and 7.x we
were getting 6420 errors, so we created an ADS.INI file with the IP
address and port which eliminated the 6420 error. But now we're getting
6097 errors 90%-95% of the time. I'm currently supporting over 200
installed ADS sites and have never had such a problem fixing it. The IT
techs in this company say that the IP address in the ADS.INI file is
correct and that there is no firewall intervention on the designated
server and port. And as usual I'm getting no cooperation with these
guys other that the problem is mine and I have to solve it. I have no
experience with VMware, so has anyone run into this problem and have any
suggestions as how to solve it?

Thanks

we're using vmware all day for all the versions and IDE we need to
support. There's no problem with vmware itself, so it must be related
to some network settings. Could you please explain more detailled
what's actually running in vmware, where it is running, what are the
network settings and so on?

Unfortunately I can't. I'm 300 miles away from the site and the systems
support group is not very cooperative/forthcoming with any information.
We've asked several questions in this regard and have gotten no answer.
The only thing I can tell you that they installed the ADS service and my
application on what they call a test/development VM server. It ran fine
there, but when they migrated it up to one of their production VM
servers, via some kind of scripting, they get the 6097 error 90-95% of
the time. I asked them what could be different between the two virtual
servers that would cause this problem and their response is nothing and
the problem is at our end. But undoubtedly their is something different.
ADS technical support told me that the 6097 error comes from the
communications layer and there isn't much I can do at the application
layer to solve this other than to make sure that the server name, IP
address, and IP port designations are correct and that there is no
intervening security/firewall protocol. I believe your correct in
saying something in their network settings but I can't get any feedback
from them on this. I have over 200 ADS application running without this
problem and not one of them is running VMware. This is the only site
running VMware and the only one having the problem. I just wish I could
point them at something other that the obvious issues of ADS.INI
settings and/or firewall/security intervention but I have absolutely no
experience with VMware. I understand the concept of VMware, but I have
no technical experience with it. So I'm going to have to take the
position that its something that Extended Systems and the VMware
developers are going to have to iron out. Unfortunately, I have a very
unhappy end user in the mean time.

Thanks;

I don't think so since ADS and vmware are running perfectly well. Ask
your customer to sniff the network and we (support) will be able to
trace the error down to their settings.

Well I'm back and they won't do a sniff. But I believe the problem is
due to slow communications. I had originally thought that they were
running on a local area network but I've since found out that they are
running over a wide area and they are attempting to connect to the
server over at T1. And this is a very busy network. At this point the
IT personnel at this company won't look any further into the problem and
I'm dead in the water. The only recommendation I'm going to make is
that they run the application under terminal services (if they have it).
I did try to have them increase the timeout setting in the ADS.INI three
fold and it just took longer for them to get the 6097.
