We have a site that is experiencing corruption of autoincrement columns [it
has happened twice over the last month].

I have looked here, will check solved cases next.

Anyone else seen this?

We are using the OEM version...

What specific version and build are you using? If this is repeatable and you
have verified that there is no hardware related issue, please consider
submitting this to technical support for investigation.

That issue was resolved in 8.0.1.3038 or later. The problem is described as:

On a non-empty table, ALTER TABLE table UPDATE MODIFY column DEFAULT
AUTOINCREMENT may not correctly update the default autoincrement identity
value. An attempt to insert a value into the table using a default value for
the autoincrement column may fail to use an unused value.

This problem only occurs if after the ALTER TABLE, no rows are inserted,
updated or deleted before the database is shut down.

Chris,

Thanks. It seems that each answer only brings more questions. Since we are
shipping the OEM version, and invoking the installation silently... what is
the recommended approach for us to upgrade to 8.0.1.3038 or later? I have
not seen install images of patch releases, and the ASA install is huge
already... so invoking a patch after installing seems very painful.

Regards, Mike Niemann

First off, did the problem described appear to be the problem that you are
encountering? When you indicate that you are seeing corruption, what exactly
do you mean?

The build in question is not a patch. It is an EBF. Therefore, the process
is to install the EBF given the context of how you currently deliver your
software. If I were in your shoes, I would not be using a silent install. I
would be building a custom install. Much of what is on the OEM CD is not
required for all deployments and as such your 'asa install is huge already'
can easily be reduced. In addition, a custom install can use the version and
build that you know to be free of issues for your application. which means
there is no need to install the MR and then the EBF.

Yes, I believe the problem is the same, although the details differ.

That is the way we used to do things [picked the various pieces from
6.0.3 and installed them ourselves]. However, with the new directory
structures related to Java drivers and Java Sybase Central... manual
installation was very problematic.... especially since the InstallShield
templates provided do not work.

If the templates actually worked, then I would agree with your "custom
install" approach.

Others are using the templates without problems. What are you seeing? Have
you reported the problems?

And I am not really following the argument related to Sybase Central and the
Java drivers directories. Perhaps you could elaborate?

Chris,

The template for JavaTools does not work. Off the top of my head, the
".scRepository" file is not created, and a couple of other things are
missing as well. Since we shipped ISQL and Sybase Central in 6.0.3, we were
attempting to do the same with 8.0.1. After spending a few weeks trying to
update our custom install... we were able to get things to work [mostly].
However, we were afraid that the next EBF/Patch would force us to go through
this again and again. We chose the "safe" route of using the vendor install.
It is very heavy though.

Sybase Central exists only as a Java app in 8.x.

One pain for us even with the silent install is that Sybase Central does not
check ODBC-JDBC bridge on the options page by default even if you select an
ODBC DSN to connect to.

Regards, Mike Niemann

We have since upgraded Installshield so that we could use "objects"... but
haven't spent anymore time here since we went with
