Hi All,

We have banking product based on Visual basic 6 and Sql anywhere .We use
client server environment setup for SQL ANYWHERE database. The parameters
used while servicing the database is
-n DatabaseName
-x tcpip
-p 4096
-c 256MB
-d
The database path.

Connection is fine and database updation is also ok. But at times we get an
error "Code = -2147467259. Description: [Sybase][ODBC Driver]Connection not
open: not connected to SQL database". But note that the connection is fine
without any problems and this error is very inconsistent.

This issue has happened on the both the following settings.

O/S : WIN NT Service pack 6a Sybase SQL version: 5.5.04 Build 1867
O/S : WIN2K Service Pack 3 Sybase SQL version: 5.5.04 Build 1867

This error happens manytimes a day. Please help me resolve this issue as it
is very urgent .

Thanking you,
Deepasree.

Whatever the problem is ....

That error code is a little weird since it is actually (in hex) 80004005
which looks more like an Windows Standard Exception (aqua a SEH)
and the for means it is an ITF facility (think OLE/COM/DCOM/ActiveX)
kind of error ... and ... as such should never occur in that context
(unless VB is inserting it).

5.5.04 was never win2K tested and there quite a few problems and
there may have even been an issue with NT4SP6a too. If you are
network connecting via TCP/IP W2k had presented issues with UDP
so if either the server or the client is a W2K that could be your entire
problem

A packet size of 4096 is too large for UDP if these packets are
exposed to alternate routing/sequencing by the network .... So if you
are really in need of that size of packet (for performance) you will
either
need to drop down to something a little smaller or upgrade to ASA
<any version>.

The last few ebfs to 5.5.05 corrected a number of problems that
surfaced in W2K .....

So download the 5.5.0x to 5.5.0.5 upgrade and then grab the latest 5.5.05
ebf as well!

Of course upgrading to a supportable version is something you should
be starting to consider seriously. 5.5.0x has be past EOL for a couple
of years now.

Hmmm, Win2K required at least 5.5.05 plus an EBF, but NT should have been
fine.

SQL Anywhere Studio Archived Versions

Note also that the 5.5.x codeline is long past its End-of-Engineering
support time. That said, there are a few things you could look at:

1) An ODBC trace to see what errors (if any) are generated prior to the
'Not connected' error.
2) The -Z output on the server, again to see if any errors are reported.
3) The Readme for the 5.5.05 patch and EBF's to see if any of the known
fixes might relate to the behaviour you are seeing.

You may want to verify that the service pack is 6a on NT. Service Pack 6 had
problems with the TCPIP layer. To check, run winver.exe. It should indicate
Revised Service Pack 6a or some variant.
