In Outlook Express, go under the Tools Menu and choose options, and then select the Maintenance tab. This dialog is
used to configure how long you want to store the messages you've downloaded locally on your system. If the messages
have already been deleted from your system, unsubscribe and then re-subscribe to the newsgroup and re-download all the
headers again. You will only download the message bodies when you actually open the message, but you'll still be able
to search based on the header information of the post (i.e. title, sender, date, ...).

For searching, you can also try groups.google.com. They archive and provided a search mechanism for a whole mess of
newsgroups including the public newsgroups on forums.sybase.com.
