Let me appologise right off the bat if this has already been posted on this
newsgroup, if it has could someone just direct me to the subject of the
post? Thanks. On with the question.

I am new to Sybase,
I followed the instructions and downloaded SWR:8776 which is the ESD#1 patch
for ASE 12.0 on windows NT (service pack 6a)

well, what do you do from here?
The PDF that came with the download only tells me to be sure to install it.
There are 6 files in the download:

Cover.ROLL.8776
aserbnt.dpf
bin/11x_bmastr.exe
bin/diafsrvr.exe
bin/sqlsrvr.exe
scripts/instmsgs.ebf

Also one more question.Sybase 11.x.x client install had SQL Advantage.
Shouldn't version 12.0 client also have it? I've installed the client but I
can't locate it anywhere.

Thanks,
Greg Roy

Hallo,

You should download ESD #2 for v12 and use that instead of ESD #1. Don't use
JISQL, it's poor and slow. You can use SQL Advantage from a previous version
with v12. You just need these files for it to work stand-alone:

mtl70mt.dll
widge32.dll
sqladv.exe

Put all three in the same directory and there you go, one SQL Advantage
working with v12.

Thanks Andy,

But I have a slight problem,
I removed Sybase 11.5 completely from my system before I installed version
12 - it's a test bed so I didn't loose anything.
Do you know if there is a utility out there that will let me read the
compressed '.z' files that are on the 11.5 CD? This way I can get those 3
files and run sql advantage.

-Greg

you can use Winzip to get at the files in a .z file. Either that, or just
install the old client on someone else's machine and take the files from
there : )

One last question.

With my purchase of Sybase 12.0, a card was provided that told me to find
ESD#1 just search for '8776' -the NT version for example-

Now you suggested that I download ESD#2, do you know what the 'number' is
that I need to search for? Or better yet, how is sybase SoftwareXpress
organized so I can find it on my own (or ESD#3+ if they are released) I've
tried looking on my own with no sucess.

Thanks for all the help so far,
Greg

The latest EBF I am aware of for NT is Rollup 12.0.0.1 (SWR 8954);
this is the first big patch for 12.0 (there have been two smaller EBFs
before, the last one being 8866 (ESD #2)). This can be downloaded from
my.sybase.com or support.sybase.com (provided you have a login ID,
which you should have when you have a support contract)

Hi Greg,

About installing the EBF:

> well, what do you do from here?

1. Backup your databases and Sybase software (not necessary, but highly
recomended)
2. Shutdown the Sybase server
3. Replace original files with the ones inluded in the download
4. Restart the Sybase server
5. Run instmsgs.ebf: isql -Usa -P -iinstmsg.ebf

You're done.

About SQL Advantege:

> Also one more question.Sybase 11.x.x client install had SQL Advantage.
> Shouldn't version 12.0 client also have it? I've installed the client but
I
> can't locate it anywhere.

The answer is no =( !!

12.0 Client should include Jisql, a java replacement for SQL Advantege. You
should use this one instead.

Hope this helps,

Juan
