Please, i want some of you to help me to determine which is the best way to
migrate from Sybase 10.0 to 11.5, i´ve do it before from 11.1 to 11.5 and i
found easier to backup the databases and logins, erase the prior version,
installing the new one and load the data and logins, i didn´t have any
problem (the data was about 1.5Gb). The fact is that this time we want to
upgrade from NT 3.51 to 4.0 too. There is any problem if i upgrade to 11.5
before upgrade to NT 4.0? It is 11.5 complaint with NT 3.51?

Hi Jaime,
11.5 is not certified on NT 3.51 but will run as long as you have sp5.
So the path will be to upgrade the server first, then the OS.

Hi Jaime,
I am doing the same migration. If you are running 10.0.x on Windows
NT3.51 then you need to upgrade Windows to NT4.0 SP3 , before your can
install ASE 11.5.x. I have done this on the development server and can
run both system 10 and 11.5 on the same NT4.0 computer. I am undecided
on the Migration path at present as I have had different people suggest
different methods. They range from :

a) Simply run the upgrade script from Sybase
b) Bulk Copy all the data out. recreate the database, bulk copy all the
data back in.
(Don't use native format)

c) Dump database out. rebuild it for load. reload database.

afterwards always drop and recreate all indexes, stored procedures,
triggers , views , so that you get new stats and query plans.

The problem I have is that we have 3500 logins , and i want to preserve
these.

Please mail me if you have any questions.

Cheers

markh :-)

Hi Alastair (or Mark?)

Path a) is OK, but path b) is probably the best, while path c) is too
much unnecessary work.

To get around the problem with the 3500 logins, what you need to do is:

1. On the source server do a
select * into tempdb..my_logins from syslogins
alter table tempdb..my_logins add srvname varchar(30) NULL

2.BCP tempdb..my_logins out starting with the 4th row

Syntax: bcp tempdb..my_logins out <file name> -U<user id> -P<password>
-S<server name> -c -F4

3. On the target server, BCP syslogins in; note that in this case the
-F4 parameter is not needed.

Syntax: bcp master..syslogins in <file name> -U<user id> -P<password>
-S<server name> -c

Note: this procedure does not synchronize sysroles or sysloginroles.

11.5 was built and released on NT 4.0; Sybase has not (and will not)
certify it on earlier versions. Complicating things, SQL Server 10.x is
not certified on NT 4.0. However, you should be able to dump the
databases under 10.x and load them into the 11.5 server following the
upgrade.
