This is my issue.

I have an inherited application that is OLD. It was originally
designed in PB 5 and now I am supporting it in version 8.

The database that it connects to is also fairly old and is running in
compatibility mode 65 (SQL Server).

I can not change the compatibility mode neither can I turn ANSI
WARNINGS on. Doing so blows up a whole lotta systems that rely on the
data in this system.

My issue is that i am trying to develop a new datawindow for the
application. I can develop any datawindow as long as I remain in the
65 database, unfortunately for me they want data from an external
database. We have other reports that have been developed crossing
over to the version 7.0 database, but I don't know how they did it.

When the reports are run through the user application the warnings are
set explicitly on for the retrieve and then turned right back on again
after the retrieve.

When I try to develop a datawindow or retrieve it it gives the ANSI
NULL WARNING message and will not compile nor retrieve. (I tried
retrieving the other datawindows that have been developed this way and
none of them will allow a preview in the powerbuilder IDE).

Is there a way to get around or shut off powerbuilders 'live' check to
the database for developing a datawindow? Or can I 'fake' it into
thinking that ANSI NULL WARNINGS have been turned on somehow?

Very much appreciate any help in this.

Thanks

Which database driver are you using? I remember seeing an "Suppress Fetch
Warnings" in the ODBC profile for several databases. Can't say whether that
exists for SQLServer '65 (lol)

You haven't been tempted to upgrade platforms in the past 10-12 years?

Are you certain about this? ANSI_WARNINGS is a connection setting which can
be set dynamically. Changes shouldn't affect any other "system".

Be careful with your terminology, since it can affect the responses you get.
There is no ANSI NULL WARNING setting. There is a ANSI_NULLS setting and a
ANSI_WARNINGS setting. I assume that you are referring to ANSI_WARNINGS -
but the same comments generally apply to the other setting as well since the
problem seems to be related to distributed queries.

Create your datawindow using an OLEDB connection - which by default sets
ansi_nulls/ansi_warnings on. Once you have it working, just be certain it
still works using your MSS connection (which is what I assume you are
actually using in the application). I believe that ODBC also does this by
default - so that is another alternative.

Another alternative (and one that I recommend) is using a stored procedure
for retrieval. This approach can completely avoid reliance on connection
settings at execution time.
