After being told by the ISUG blog that 12.5 will be available soon as
my gold member benefit, I thought I would take the advice and download
it.
Unfortunately, despite a graphic and a heading saying 12.5 has been
released, the download behind it was for 12.
So I went to http://www.sybase.com/downloads .. PowerBuilder is not
mentioned.. But you can download PocketBuilder 2.5!

http://eshop.sybase.com/eshop/try_buy has PowerBuilder 12.0

I have previously found PB links to version 11.5 etc..

I know Sybase does not believe in marketing PowerBuilder but... Not
even its own website?

I have a commercial copy on my machine at work which has been
downloaded from subscribenet.

Who else in all of the Software industry would release a new version
of their software and then not have it available for downloading?

Feel free to answer in your own mind.

Never mind that some links - to 12.0 and 11.5 are getting pretty
ancient.

I'm pretty sure that subscribenet could easily handle all the people
downloading PB 12.5 evaluation or commercial.

So, first off, ISUG is not Sybase; it's an (allegedly) independent
organization, although mistaking it for a software distribution arm of
Sybase marketing is understandable.

Secondly, think of the two options. The new software comes out of
engineering, what do you do? Get it out to paying customers ASAP and let
the rest follow, or get all the internal and external organizations (you
know that in an organization the size of Sybase, let alone SAP, changing
the web site is SO much more than editing the HTML) all lined up and hold
up the product for weeks to make the release appear unified across the
marketing fronts? (Yes, there's advance planning, but do you want Sybase to
release PB when the other departments have been told, or when it's ready?
We know what a disaster releasing to a date can be if the product isn't
ready yet.) You've obviously got your preference; I hope you'll understand
there are those with a different preference.

Good luck,

Terry and Sequel the techno-kitten

Hi Terry;

That is not the point. Any ISUG member should be able to download PB 12.5
like the rest of the world as a 45 day trial. The only difference will be
that ISUG is currently acquiring the PB 12.5 license files for its members.
If Brett cannot download it to line up with his ISUG needs - neither can all
the rest of the world that wants to just try it. This SNAFU is unacceptable
IMHO and just another example of how Sybase needs to get their act together
(I am sad to say). :-(

I'm glad everyone is anxious to get a copy of PowerBuilder 12.5 but
the official release date is supposed to be today. The team that
loaded it on Subscribenet finished their work a couple of days earlier
and the automatic notification system sent out the emails about its
availability. The evaluation copy and the ISUG copy should be
available shortly.

Dave, are you sure the team finished their work uploading to Subscribenet?

If you are right, then I must complain at Sybase soon because I can
still not see it up there under our account and we did not received any
notification yet

But we definitely do have a subscription...

Andi

Hi Dave;

What about InfoMaker USP users who need just IM 12.5 Classic to go along

I'm glad everyone is anxious to get a copy of PowerBuilder 12.5 but
the official release date is supposed to be today. The team that
loaded it on Subscribenet finished their work a couple of days earlier
and the automatic notification system sent out the emails about its
availability. The evaluation copy and the ISUG copy should be
available shortly.

So, you're clearly voting for delaying the release until it can be rolled
out in a coordinated fashion. That would have left me bored last night, but
OK. We'll have to ask Dave to slap those SubscribeNet hands for doing their
jobs too efficiently!

Good luck,

Terry and Sequel the techno-kitten

Its not the SubscribeNet guys problem ... its the management of the
product release. Sybase hypes up the release date and then falters in
various areas causing a backlash effect from the PB community. It just makes
Sybase look unprofessional.

So ... what's wrong with a coordinated release? :-)

Like you I have also had the subscribenet copy for a few days now. I
did not realise that PB12.5's release date was this week which may
explain why the Web site had not been updated.

I will hold off any further recommendations that people try out the
new code until the site is ready.
