Hi,

I have a DD with a table which is about 1.3gb in size.

It has 2579824 records and 43 fields.

Whenever I add a new field, it takes between 40 minutes and 1.5 hours to
finish the process.

Aside from a faster machine, would it be quicker if I change the temp folder
path in the DD to be a different drive?

Could it also be slow because I always add fields as specific positions i.e.
23 rather than putting them at the end?

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,
Adding a field involves rebuilding the entire table. The new table is created
in the same directory as the old one, so changing the temp folder path won't
have any effect. Also, specifying the field position has no effect since
the data is copied on a per field basis. Any indexes on the table are rebuilt
at the end, again in the same directory as the original indexes. Other than
upgrading the server's hardware, I can't think of any way to speed up the
restructure. We have implemented a short cut so that just changing a field
name doesn't rebuild the table.
