I'm saving the content of my datawindow as Excels (SaveAs) but the
name of the header column are not the name as on screen. Meaning the
header on my column is Name and then my rows shows the names, but
SaveAs gives first_name as my header.

Is there a way we can change the header when saving as Excels.

thanks in advance.
Mike

Hi Mike;

The SaveAs grabs the column names from the DW buffer not the labels. So
what you will see are the raw column names or some hybrid of the table and
column name together. That is the DW Painters default at construction time.

So ... what you need to do is supply synonyms for the columns names in
your SQL select.
For example:

Select cname "Customer Name",
fname "First Name",
lname "Last Name",
s_no "SIN Number"
From Employee

Hi Chris,

thanks for your quick reply. You just gave me an idea on top of your
suggestion. Sometime a suggestion brings more suggestions... :)

I just check the DW syntax module and found out that you can
manipulate the dbName atttribut of the columns. I did a test and
worked. I changed the dbName attribut of the columns and SaveAs
('filename.xls', Excel!, true) and the header was changed by my new
header names.

That property is used to generate the SQL to update the database. Of course,
if you are just saving to XL and not to the database, it won't hurt.

Hi, Mike

As Chris said, SaveAs function saves what's inside the DW buffer - column
labels correspond to your column specification, data rows are totally
unformatted. So almost nothing you see on-screen like dropdown stylings,
column headers, display formats etc. is exported.

There are certain workarounds like the proposed one (to use more meaningful
aliases), like to use SaveAsAscii to a text file + OLE to import the text
file in Excel, third party tool like dw2xls one... No trivial solution to
the problem

So vote for the ISUG enhancement request for a "Native save to XLS of the
visible contents". Someone would eventually consider the additional
implementation of DW properties specifying to convert some objects into
formulae cells, not into data ones.

Regards,
Ivaylo

Hi Ivaylo,

I think you have a great idea to vote for this request. I ear many
developers asking this question on how to change the header. Having a
native SaveAs would manage better the GUI aspect and visibly more
professional.

I'll vote

regards,
Michel
