Hi all,

I have a crosstab DW and all I would like to do is programmatically
get the title of a column in the DW.

Is this at all possible? If so, can you please advise how to achieve
this?

Thanking you for your time,

Best regards,
Atmaram

The usual approach to getting column titles is to apply a consistent
naming convention to the text fields that match the column names

So for column "emp_name" the text field would be named "t_emp_name" and
you can therefore get the title by adding "t_" to any column name to get
the text field.

Or you could use the tag property on the column and add a title in there
but I am not a fan of that method although it would probably be a
quicker solution.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your response.

I think I did not formulate my requirement properly. There is the
column name and that is what you have described. That's fine. I am
talking about the title that we give to columns. For instance, a
column emp_name might have a title "Emplyee Name". That's what I want
to get/access.

Is this possible?

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks and Regards,
Atmaram

By title you mean the text field that is separate from the column, right?

Exactly, I mean the header title for a particular column.

Thanks again,

Take a read again of my response, I was referring to the text object and
how you can label it with a "t_" prefix and then append the column name.
If you name all your column headers consistently then you can
dynamically get hold of the column title or use the tag property.

If you mean to get the text upon a dynamically generated crosstab column,
you have to switch crosstab to static mode first:
string ls_cur_mode
ls_cur_mode = Lower(dw_my.Describe("DataWindow.Crosstab.StaticMode"))
if ls_cur_mode <> "yes" then
dw_my.Modify("Datawindow.Crosstab.StaticMode='yes'")

In this mode you have access to each DW columns as it is a normal column in
a grid DW. Play around with the result returned by:
dw_my.Describe("Datawindow.Objects")

This is a tab-separated list of all DW controls available for you. Parse the
string into array, loop through the array elements, skip non-text elements
(Describe(ls_objects[i] + ".Type") <> "text"), skip elements not starting
with some prefix (your dynamic columnname) and finally, describe ".Text"
property for each one of them:
string ls_objects[]
f_string_parse_into_array(dw_my.Describe("Datawindow.Objects"), ls_objects)
for i = 1 to UpperBound(ls_objects)
if Left(ls_objects[i], len("mycolumn")) <> "mycolumn" then continue
if dw_my.Describe(ls_objects[i] + ".Type") <> "text" then continue
MessageBox("Text of " + ls_objects[i], dw_my.Describe(ls_objects[i] +
".Text"))
next

Do not forget to restore the original crosstab mode at the end:
if ls_cur_mode <> "yes" then dw_my.Modify("Datawindow.Crosstab.StaticMode='"
+ ls_cur_mode + "'")
