We installed Sybase 15. When we create a new field on a table and
define it as varchar(any number) is converting to a data type of
longsysname. The same is true for user datatypes. Is there a setting
we are missing on the database?

Sorry - more details - We are using DBArtisan 8.12 wizard to add a new
field and it ends up appearing as longsysnames instead of varchar.
Using an SQL Script does not end up with this error.

However, a bigger issue is trying to create a user datatype:

sp_addtype tid, "varchar(16)", "not null"

ends up appearing as longsysnames and not varchar(16).

any ideas?

Are you also using DBArtisan to create the user defined datatype? Have you tried using 'isql' (command line) to create
the user defined datatype?

Here's what I get when using 'isql' againt a ASE 15.0.3/ESD#1 instance:

=============
1> sp_addtype tid, "varchar(16)", "not null"
2> go

Type added.
(return status = 0)

1> sp_help tid
2> go

Type_name Storage_type Length Prec Scale Nulls Default_name Rule_name Access_Rule_name Identity
--------- ------------ ------ ---- ----- ----- ------------ --------- ---------------- ----------
tid varchar 16 NULL NULL 0 NULL NULL NULL 0

(1 row affected)
(return status = 0)
=============

Without more details my guess would be that the client application you're using is doing something funky/wrong under the
covers. If you've got MDA tables configured (specifically monSysSQLText), or command auditing enabled (via sybsecurity
database), you should be able to see what the client application is submitting to the dataserver.

sounds like an issue with whatever you are using to look at the datatype.
What does "isql" command sp_help say the datatype is?

Our DBA tried out the ISQL and still got longsysnames - here is his
reply:

"The error is not tool dependent because I’ve tested on DBArtisan and
isql and got longsysname in both cases."
