Hi,

Based upon current experience, what's the best / most solid release /
version available? Doing a new ASE 15 install on SunOS 5.10.

Thanks,

Jeff Garbus

Well, that's rather scary considering the experience and expertise of the
person asking the question.

I would expect 15.0.3 ESD #2 but I'm just starting to upgrade from 12.5.3 to
this release and don't have anywhere near enough experience to vouch for it.

I agree with Carl, I'm surprised You asked...

I've done 15.0.2ESD#6 and 15.0.3ESD#1.
Both seem pretty solid.
There are a few quirks in 1502 with MDA tables when procedures recompile on the fly with schema bumps. The context counts go to
0.

I seem to have a talent (an anti-talent?) for "starting something"
with the simplest questions...

For the record, in the 20+ years I've been working with it, I have
always considered ASE to be a stable, solid environment.

That said, the fact that there is an ESD #6 implies that ESD 1-5 had
room for improvement. We don't always know whether an upgrade was to
fix "a few quirks ... with MDA tables" or to make an improvement in
the optimizer. And, until folks have been running substantial systems
in production for a period of time, we don't know if we like the new
release better. So, when I install a new server, I ALWAYS ask around
to see who's happiest with which versions on which platforms... a
habit that's stood me in good stead since about version 4.8, and which
I recommend when I teach Systems Administration. Don't all DBAs
(regardless of technology) have an active paranoia associated with
upgrades, when things are currently running smoothly? It's nice to
know which releases are running smoothly... and it is nicer to hear
that all the more current releases are.

I thought asking the open forum might be fun (I do have some of my own
sources :) ), wasn't trying to start a panic.

Jeff

In that case, I've have found that the most stable and reliable release of
ASE was/is 11.0.3.3 ESD6 :)

No no no.....

It was 4.9.2!

:-)

Seriously though - we're currently phasing in 15.0.3 ESD 2 into
production over the coming weeks/months

Any cool new features?

Compared to 4.9.2? 11.0.3? 12.5.3? 15.0.3 ESD #1?

Going back to your OP you're going to install a fresh 15.0.x. There were a
lot of new features with 15.0.2. And some piece-meal enhancements with
15.0.2 ESDs. I can't see using a version earlier than 15.0.2.

Do you use Rep Server? 15.0.3 has SQL Statement Replication and two MDA
tables for Rep Server. Some other new stuff as well.

It's still very, very early in the game for me, but the coolest feature for
me, so far, is Archive Database Access (15.0.2).

The really cool new features that I've heard about will be in 15.5 - that
version has a whole host of new things that will really help get better
throughput for operations that don't require 100% transactional behavior
in ALL circumstances - great for reporting/DSS type operations where a
failure of some sort can be either overlooked or re-run.

As far as 15.0.3 is concerned - there are various improvements - the
statment replication that Carl mention is probably one of the most obvious.
