PPB Programmers,
I have a really ugly sample program for the cool PPT-8800 I just got.
No extra DLLs needed, just external function calls.

Over the labor day weekend I'll be making this pretty.
I had to use an undocumented HACK which decent people
don't know about.

Hopefully I'll have a cleaner approach by then.
Worst case, I'll post a version with the nasty hack
and a version which uses a DLL but is more elegant and PB'ish.

Regards,
Reed Shilts

P.S.
The "Pumpkin" version will have some new
system functions for the ugliness I had to go through...

I've just posted two samples using the Symbol PPT-8800 scanner
onto CodeXchange (new section for "Special Hardware").
Nothing special needed, good old external function calls.

Like all samples I make, I'm a C++/Java programmer, we have
a different way.....
Have fun, write cool apps,

Good new Reed, thanks !!

Did you have troubles like loosing the software after a soft reboot with the
Symbol?
I am very interested in experiences with the Symbol PDA's. I hope the Symbol
we have is an 'one-only' because this PDA did have some troubles. We like to
know if we can go further with Symbol...

Cheers
Hans

Well We also deviced a dirty method of getting things done; We invoked the
scanner sample application from our Application which activated the scanner
on the deivice and made it send a handle to our application after each scan
and create a text file with scanned values. Our Application then read the
text file and pasted the values in the active box.

Well it worked in a way; but thanks for taking care of this issue.

Best Wishes

Mohit Chanana

Reed, It seems the setdecoder function is not being initialized properly
hence the scanner it not geting data from various barcode types. We scrolled
through sample C files and we found that the scanner initializes all
decoders from registry before sending a label scan. Is their a way to make
the all decoders enabled flag true ? How are you sending the desired barcode
scan string ?

Thanks!!

About not returning any data, but the length being correct.
It could be an ASCII/Unicode thing.
If you have a different model maybe it returns the data in ASCII,
which (of course) is truncated...
hmmmmmmm

Poke around and let everybody know.
When some time frees up on my end I'll look around too.
(waaaaay busy with Pumpkin right now)

A couple things about the SCAN_BUFFER

** You'll see the PPB structure definition matches
the C-API definition "SCAN_BUFFER_W", slightly
different than the online help file.

** Does the "symbology" field look correct?
Is it a string that matches the reality of the data source?

** Looking at the function "f_read_scanner_data"
On my device the scanned in data is at offset:
scan_buffer_copy.data_buffer

However, the structure is actually more general than that.
The data may actually be at:
g_lscan_buffer + scan_buffer_copy.aux_data_buffer_offset
or there abouts....

Eyeball the definition of the str_scan_buffer and poke around.
Undocumented trick - the "address" modifier in string():
string foo = STRING( absolute_address, "address" )

to print out the unicode string at a specific memory address...

*** Also, in the str_scan_buffer is the flag "isMultiPart" set??
*** Is there a value in "num_packets_remaining" ??

Hope this helps,
Reed Shilts

This helped me. I have it working now, but need to do more testing. Its not
aux offset, but data offset. I also changed the structure to use
unsignedlongs instead of longs.

g_lscan_buffer + scan_buffer_copy.offset_to_data

I'll keep playing with it. and let people know what I find.

Good idea about the "unsigned longs" - just did that.
On my machine, after a UPC read,
the values for various scan buffer entries are:

- data_length = 12
- symbology: SCN1:UPCA
- data_buffer: string of data
- offset_to_data = 148 (expected - size of main structure)
- data_buffer_size = 4002 (expected - what I allocated)
- isMultiPart = false
- num_packets_remaining = 0
- aux_buffer_offset = 0
- aux_buffer_length = 0

I am not sure how the "aux_buffer" is different from
the "data buffer"...
I see mention of the "aux buffer" in discussions about
the params for the various decoder types...
But nothing jumps up about what's happening.

A possibility, which Dean may be saying in another posting, is that
the read routine shouldn't assume the data being read starts always
at the same place, but use the dynamic "base address + offset_to_data"

I'm going to experiment with that a bit and probably post another
version...
(It's Friday afternoon and I don't want to start another big project,
so this is some playtime)

I just put some more printouts in "f_read_scanner_data" method.

I have just added more functionality and re-posted
onto CodeXChange...

* Get scanner device information
* Get the supported and enabled decoders (with a UI tab)
* Set the enabled decoders (untested because that
requires a UI...)
If you need to "enable" decoders, try the method in
the scanner object, it is "get enabled decoders" but backwards.

If there are any problems with it, let me know, but I gotta tell
you, that isn't a high priority issue right now...

Have fun,

About my 'problem-Symbol'... what version of the Symbol do you have? The
version number is visible at startup in right bottom corner. They told me to
upgrade the version by uploading some HEX files, after the upgrade the
problems should be over. I have received another Symbol with a newer
versions that gives no problems... so, I would like to know if your version
is also newer then the problem Symbol.

I have a PPT-8800
PocketPC-2003, 64MB memory, 400MHz
The Asset applet is gone in PPC2003 so that's all I can find.
There's no numbers when it starts up, just regular PPC start menu.
