dear forum user's

I have a problem more, sorry!

Now I'm working with PB 11.5 and the Rich Text Column in the Datawindow.

When I try to put a big text into the column, I recieve an error message:
...This exceeds the size of the column (32766).

My Database Datatype is long varchar. This Datatype is definitely bigger
than
32766. What can I do?

Thanks!

Hi Andi;

Can you tell us ...

1) DBMS that you are using (including the version)?
2) Data type & length of the RT column that the DW is using?
3) DBMS connection mechanism and any special settings?

Yes, I can:

1) Sybase Adaptive 6.04 and/or Sybase Anywhere 9.02

2) In the edit source code:
column=(type=char(32766) update=yes updatewhereclause=no
name=pae_massnahmekommentar
dbname="pflegeatleintrag.pae_massnahmekommentar"
dbalias=".pae_massnahmekommentar" )
+ look at my attachment error_dw2.jpg) --> Why 32766 ???

3) sqlca.dbms = "ODBC"
sqlca.dbparm = "Connectstring='DSN=" + "ODBC_ENTRY" +
";UID=dba;PWD=powerbuilder'"
connect;

Thank you very much!
Andi

Hi Andi;

Thanks for the information.

I seem to be restricted with SA (testing with version 11) and the ODBC
driver in the same way. The key AFAIK is to make sure that you use the "Long
VarChar" column data type as opposed to a VarChar that max's out at 32K.
However, even when I do this the DWO always restricts the column size to
32K.

If I use a Microsoft SS2008 database with a column type of Varchar MAX
... and, set the "PBMaxTextSize=" connection parameter to 2G (or something
>32K) - I can build a DWO where the column's length appears >32K as well. So
it looks to me like either an ODBC limitation or a PB-to-ODBC hand-shake
limitation as the DWO seems to be told that a Long VarChar is only 32K max -
which is false, its 2G.

I wonder if someone from iAnywhere can jump in here to shed some more
light on this mystery?

Note: For SS2008 I was using the SNC db driver.

chris, did you try to edit the dw syntax and change the 32k to 2gig manually?
That would narrow down the problem to either the datawindow getting it wrong, or the database driver/pb odbc

When I set the dw syntax manualy to '40000', than I can use
this column for 40000 , but I can't save it....

It seems that your longvarchar is being seen as a varchar by the driver. varchar max size is 32K.

try changing the datatype to TEXT
text is implemented as longvarchar internally by sql anywhere

I wonder if you can use an embedded SQL to do the update instead of using
DW?

OK, embeded SQL:
Update pflegeatleintrag
Set pae_massnahmekommentar = repeat('a', 40000)
Where pae_id = 25;
That work's fine!

An Update in the Datawindow with 40000 'a'; saves only 32767 'a'.

Make sure that the column doesn't contain more data than that. It's
one of the built in limitations of the rich text column.

Otherwise, you may need to consider using a seperate rich text control
instead, which does not have that size limitation.

Thank you for your answer.

You write: "It's one of the built in limitations of the rich text column".

Never mind, follow where Chris is leading you. I understood there was
a 32K limit for the control, but I ass/u/me/d that it had something to
do with the control itself. I've since found it's entirely determined
by how much text you can get into a column, which is tied to the
specific database and driver you are using.

Ok, but, does anyone has an idea, what my problem is?

I use the Adaptive Server Anywhere 9.0 ODBC driver. is the wrong or the
false driver?

Thanks...
