In some cases workspace locks up loading schema data while in the SQL
editor. It tends to happen when I'm connected to a remote dataserver (I'm
in Switzerland, the dataserver is in New York), and the remote dataserver
has a large number of databases (40 or more).

I don't see any obvious reason for the slowdown/lockup (i.e. getting
hourglass cursor and no other threads can run in the IDE).

Any idea why this might happen?

Thanks,

Michael

The problem may come from the very large number of databases
(and database objects, tables, etc) combined with the
comparatively slow network (WAN access). It took somewhere
around 15 minutes until Workspace became usable.

That said a similar tool (also written in Java) loads all
the meta data much faster.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Would you provide the following information:
o. WorkSpace version used

o. Detailed descriptions about the database configuration, e.g., number of
stored procedures, tables, user defined types, logins/users, etc.

Thanks and regards,
Hung

Hi,

I'm using Version: 2.0.0 Build id: 20070807185618.

The target dataserver has 190 databases, with a lot of
objects in the various databases. I work on a subset of this
information, but require access to several (10-15)
databases, with several hundred stored procs, tables, views
and users in each database.

The main problem from my point of view is that Workspace
blocks on the thread that loads the data, rather than doing
that process in the background.

Michael,

We tested on large databases w/ 5000 stored procedures, 500 UDT, 5000
tables, and we are using lazy loading, i.e., we don't load all things in one
shot.

We did have noticed a performance bug recently that when there are a lot of
schema (roles) in the database, which has been fixed in the coming WorkSpace
2.0 ESD#1.

Do you have lots of schema(roles) in the database?

Thanks and regards,
Hung

Thanks for the update!

I'm not really sure - it looks like there are about 130
roles defined in the server, and about 2500 logins.

The issue seems to be the number of databases (in this case
190), where the code I work on uses at least a dozen of
these databases.

I'm experiencing such a lock up at the moment. Looking at
sysprocesses through another connection I can see that
Worskapce appears to fetch symbols (data from syscomments,
etc) for all (or at least a large number) of databases. As
this isn't done in the background, and as we have a large
number of databases, and as the dataserver is access through
a WAN this takes a long time (15-20 minutes).

Michael,

Looks like you hit at least the roles/login issues we recently fixed (in the
next ESD).

As for the mutliple database issues, we'll look into it further and get back
to you.

Thanks and regards,
Hung
